Barry Shay Attorney, Agent, or Firm-Leonard H. King [5 7 ABSTRACT A jewelry accessory which is adapted to be mounted over the pin of an article of jewelry such as a brooch,
" readily transforms it into a pendant or a band-attached 7 Claims, 6 Drawing Figures ADJUSTABLE ACCESSORY FOR ATTACHING A BROOCH TO A BAND BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to jewelry and, more particularly pertains to an accessory for transforming a pinattached article of jewelry such as a brooch, into a pendant or band-attached ornament.
At present there are in common use certain articles of jewelry and novelty jewelry such as brooches, breast pins, clips and the like, which are detachably secured to the clothing of the wearer by pins or the like. With their present construction, these articles of jewelry are limited to such use.
A jewelry accessory fabricated according to the principles of the present invention provides a means for transforming a pin-attached article of jewelry into a band-attached ornament. The accessory comprises a first ,elongated sleeve member adapted to slide over the pin of the article of jewelry, the first sleeve member is provided with a loop means proximate one end, which is adapted for threading banding therethrough. A second alongated sleeve member is adapted to slide over the pm of the article of jewelry and is adapted to telescope within the first sleeve member. The second sleeve member is provided with loop means proximate one end and is adapted for threading banding there through. Restraining means for holding the first and second telescoping members in multiple lengths corresponding to the length of the pin is provided, whereby the accessory may be fully extended between the pin catch and hinge, thereby providing means for holding the article ofjewelry properly balanced when banded.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING In the various figures of the drawing, like reference characters designate like elements.
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the rear of a brooch type article of jewelry with which an accessory may be used;
FIG. 2 is an exploded view in elevation, of the accessory shown in FIG. 1 partially broken away for convenience;
FlGf3 is an exploded view in elevation of an alternative embodiment of the present invention using threaded restraining means;
FIG. 4. is an end view of the embodiment shown in FIG. 3;
FIG. 5 is an alternative restraining means shown in elevation, utilizing the principles of the present inventron;
FIG. 6 is another embodiment of a restraining means, utilizing the principles of the present invention, which incorporates tapered flexible threads and a jam nut to restrain the telescoping member.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT The rear of a brooch 10 is shown in FIG. 1 with the pin 12 being hinged at one end by conventional hinge means 14 and restrained within conventional catch means 16. A jewelry accessory 18, according to the principles of the present invention, consists of an elongated sleeve member 20, which is adapted to slide over the pin 12 of the brooch 10. The sleeve member is provided with a loop means 22 proximate one end.
Loop means 22 is adapted for threading a chain 24 therethrough or any alternative type of flexible banding such as ribbon.
A second elongated sleeve member 26, also adapted to slide over pin 12, is adapted to be telescoped within the first sleeve member 20. The second sleeve member 26 is also provided with loop means 28 proximate one end, which is adapted for threading banding material therethrough.
The outer dimension of the second elongated sleeve member is made to provide a friction contact with the inner surface of the sleeve 20, thereby providing slidable means such as telescoping, which is restrainable in any position desired. The friction contact between the inner wall surface 30 of the elongated member 20 and the outer surface 32 of the elongated member 26 is illustrated in FIG. 2.
An alternative embodiment of the present invention shown in an enlarged view in FIG. 3 and FIG. 4 includes a first elongated sleeve 34,which is provided with internal threads 36. A second sleeve member 38 is provided with external threads 40 adapted to cooperate with the internal threads 36. Included on the second sleeve member proximate one end is a loop means 42 utilized for threading banding material, not shown, therethrough. Sleeve member 38 is provided with an opening 44 which enables the sleeve member 38 to be placed over the pin 12 of a brooch 10, or other articles of jewelry affixed to clothing by means of a pin. The loop means 42 is provided with a hole 46 for the purpose of allowing banding material, not shown, to be threaded therethrough as explained earlier.
In another alternative embodiment of the present invention, shown in FIG. 5, a first sleeve 48 is provided with a hole 50 to enable it to be mounted on a pin 12. However, affixed to one end of sleeve 48 is a nut 52, which is internally threaded. A second sleeve member 54 is provided with external threads 56 adapted to cooperate with the internal threads of the nut 52 affixed to the end of sleeve 48. A lock nut 58, with internal threads, is adapted to be mounted on the external threads 56 of sleeve 54. The second sleeve member 54 is threaded into the first sleeve member 48 and is held in position by the lock nut 58 being brought up tight against the nut 52 as shown in FIG. 5.
In FIG. 6 the first hollow sleeve member 60 is provided with flexible tapered threads 62 on one end. The flexible threads are accomplished by providing the threaded taper with a slot 66 which allows for the movement of the threaded portion 64 of sleeve 60 when jam nut 68 is threaded thereon. A second sleeve member 70 is adapted to fit in the opening 72 of sleeve member 60 and is held in position by jam nut 68 being tightened on the flexible taper 64.
The device is quite small having a dimension between inch to l 4 inches in the telescoped position and from about 1 inch to 2 inches in the opened position.
, Thus a inch unit would open inthe range I inch to l /2 inches.
Hereinbefore has been disclosed a jewelry accessory for transforming a pin-attached article of jewelry into a band-attached ornament which is readilyadaptable to various size pins and may be fixed in position to insure that the article of jewelry is properly balanced when banded and worn by an individual.
