To all whom it'may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES J OPLING, of What Cheer, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved 5 Coal Ohute, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. I
The object of myinvention is to provide a new and improved coal-beaver for loading box or flat cars with coal or other material without The invention consists ofa sliding and laterally-adjustable scuttle in connection with -an inclined chute and an intermediate hinged curved plate, and of devices for operating the i5 scuttle and the hinged plate.
The invention also consists of various parts and details and combinations of the same, as
will. be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims. Reference is to be had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, inwhich similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improvement. Fig.2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same, on the line was of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a'detail front View of thesame, parts being removed.
My improved coal-beaver is mounted on a frame, A, of suitable construction, provided with astationary chute, B, which is curved or semicircular on its lower half, and to the ex- 'treme lower end of which chute is connected a hinged curved plate, 0. To each side of the 5 outer end of the plate 0 is attached a chain, D, whichpasses over a pulley, E, attached to the timbers of the frame A, and each chain D is provided on its other end with a balancingweight, F. A curved scuttle, G, conforming 40 in shape at its upper end to the curved plate 0, is placed next to the curved plate G and is pivoted to ablock or slide, H, held adj ustably by meansof a set-screw, H, on a square bar,'I, running below and parallel with the chute B,
and being guided in bearings J, sliding in curved recesses or grooves K, formed in the cross-beams A and A of the frame A. The lower end of the bar I is provided with an adjustable casting, L, through a recess of which passes a segment, G, having apertures G? and being secured to the bottom of the scuttle G.
A pin, M, passes through the casting L and through one of the apertures G in the segment G, so as to hold the souttle G in a position parallel with andinclined to the bar 1. Each 5 of thebearings J is provided on each side with lugs J and J, to each of which is attached a chain, J which pass over guiderollcrs N upward to a Windlass, N, mounted on the standards N, attached to the platf0rmA formed on the frame A. - An arm, Q, held adjust-ably on the bar I by a 55 set-screw, is providedon its lower end witha ring, Q, to which is attached a chain, R, which passes over guide-rollers S, upward and around a Windlass, T, mounted on standards T, secured tothe platform A The Windlass Tis provided with a crank-arm, U, which can be held in position bya pin, V, inserted in one of the apertures T in the standard T.
The operation is as follows: In order that every part of a car may be loaded with coal it 7 is necessary to move the scuttle G from one end of the car to the other, so as to avoid moving the car. The scuttle is moved to one side by turning the crank-arm 0 so that one of the chains J pulls on its respective lug J or J on 8o the bearing J, which slides in the curved grooves K, and the chain is wound up on the Windlass N while the other chain unwinds correspondingly from the same Windlass. The scuttle can be made to slideup or down in line with the curved chute B by turning the handle U of the Windlass T, so that the'latter winds up the chain R, which pulls on the arm Q, attached to the bar I, and thereby slides the latter, which carries the scuttle G on 0 the bearings J. Theintermediate connecting curved plate, 0, can be disconnected from the chute B, and the scuttle G and the chute B can be brought into directv connection with each other wherever desired. It will be seen 5 that when the scuttle G is moved to the right the coal coming down the chute B will pass to the left of the car, and when the scuttle G is moved to the left the coal will pass over to the right of the car, sothat every part of the car I00 can be loaded with coal by the operator standing on the platform A 'and working the wind lasses N and T, as desired. The scuttle G can be raised to any desired height by inserting the pins M in the apertures G in the segment G;
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The combination, with the chute having a rounded or curved portion at its forward end, of a scuttle curved to correspond to the curved end of the chute, and a longitudinally and laterally movable rod, connected to the said scuttle, whereby the scuttle may be moved longitudinally or laterally in the are described by the curved end of the chute, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the chute, of the longitudinally sliding rod, horizontally-movable bearings therefor, curved ways for said bearings, means for operating the rod, and a scuttle hinged to swing vertically on the forward end of the said bar, substantially as set forth.
3. I11 a coal-beaver, the combination of the chute B and the scuttle G, hinged to the block H, and the segment G, with the bar I, the adjustable block H, the casting L, and the pin M, substantially as shown and described.

with the bearings J, sliding in the grooves K in the cross-beams A and A and the chains J wound upon the Windlass N, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a coal-beaver, the combination of the scuttle G, pivoted to the block H, the bar I, and the bearings J, sliding in the grooves K and provided withthe lugs J" and J, with the chains J the Windlass N, the crank-arm O, mounted on the standards N having apertures P, and the pin P, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a coal-heaver, the combination of the.
scuttle G, pivoted to the block H, the bar I, and the bearings J, sliding in the grooves K and provided with the lugs J and J with the adj ustablearm Q, the rope R, passing over the guide-rollers S, the Windlass T, mounted on the standards T, having the apertures T the crank-arm U, and the pin V, substantially as shown and described.
7. In a coal-heaver, the combination of the chute B, the hinged plate 0, the scuttle G,pivoted to the block H, the segment G, having apertures G the casting L, the pin M, and the bar I, sliding in the bearings J, with the bearings J, the chains J the Windlass N, the crank-arm O, the arm Q, the chain R, the Windlass T, and the crank-arm U, substantially as shown and described.
8. In a coal-beaver, the combination of the inclined chute B, made semicircular in its lower half, with the hinged curved plate G, the chains D, the pulleys E, and the weight F, substantially as shown and described.
