SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,531, dated November 16, 1886.
Application filed May 26, 1886. Serial No. 203,302.. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. FELTEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mer rill, in the county of Lincoln and State of Wis- A 5 cousin, have invented certain new and useful Improvenrentsin DriveWell Points; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apfv ro pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which forrn a part of this specifica tion. r 5 This invention relates to that class of drivewell points having surrounding strainers, and has for its object to provide a guard for the same to prevent injury when being driven through strata of rock. c
It consists in the novel features more particularl y hereinafter set forth and claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure I is a view in elevation of a point of my construction embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line .fr d: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a View in elevation, parts being broken away, showing the details of construction and relative location of the parts.
The device comprises the short tube A,hav-
The guards consist of metal hars, and may be of any desired length, and of any shape in cross-section. They are of sufficient thickness, and arranged in such proximity to each other that they form a complete barrier' and 45 ward off stones, Snc., and prevent injury to the strainers when the well is being driven.
The base of the point bulges and projects beyond the sides of the tube to give clearance for the guards, the ends of which taper to as- 5o sist in gently pushing aside any un-yielding. substance. The outer screen is longer than the inner one, and its ends are bent thereover and soldered tothe tube.
Having thus describedmy invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The herein shown and described well-point, consisting ofthe following elements: the tube A, having aser'ies of perforations longitudi- 6c nally arranged in parallelv rows; surrounding screens, bars located opposite the spaces between the rows of perforations, and serving the double purpose of clamping the screens bet-Ween them and the tube, and a barrier or 6 5 guard for preventing injury to the screens, screws passed through the bars and screens and screwed into the tube for retaining the bars in place, and apoint secured to the lower end of the tube, 'and having its base bulging 7o and extended beyond the sides of said tube, substantially as shown, and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM F. FELTEN.
