UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. Y
OLIVER B. YOUNG, or DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR or ONE-HALF To WILLIAM r. BLENMAN, or SAME PLACE.
COMBINED MAlL-BAG-CORD'CASE AND LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,502, dated November 9, 1886.
.Application filed April 17, 1885. Serial No. 162,569. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLIVER B. YOUNG, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Mail Bag- Cord Case and Look; and Ido declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
- and will occupy less space within the case than the common cord in use; and my invention consists in the means set forth for operating the cord-spool within the case and in the general construction of the parts, as specified, being an improvement upon Letters Patent No. 314,985.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective of myinvention as it appears upon amail-bag, the bag being closed. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective View of the device, showing its mechanism, having the front plate of the case removed. Fig. 3 is a view of the front plate of the case as removed from Fig. 2. spectives of the parts forming the spool D. Fig. 6 is a section of the parts on dotted lines as m of Figs. 1 and 2.
B represents the mailbag as closed at the top, and G is the cord and lock case as it appears when locked.
c is the metal or woven-wire cord, which passes in the common way through the eyelets of the bag, being double where it enters the spool, passing around the same, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6.
The lock and cord case consists of a circular cup-shaped shell, as shown in Fig. 2, and fitting over the same is a face or front plate, as
Figs. 4 and 5 are per-.
shown in Fig. 3, and within the caseCthelock and cord works are confined, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6. e g
In Fig. 2, D is the cord-spool,which consists of two parts, H H, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The back portion, H," of the spool has cast on its face centrally the ring R, which extends outwardly at right angles-to the face of said part. The edge of the ring is provided with three projections or locking-lugs, d dd. Said lugs pass through the holes 6 e e of the part H. When in position, the lugs are riveted down, securing the parts of the spool together, as shown in Fig. 2. The ring Rforms a circular wall, over which the cords c c are wound, as
is attached to the shaft m, which passes through the holesff of the spool. The outer ends of said shaft project through and have square ends 0. (See Figs. 2 and 6.) Saidsquare ends fill square holes in the walls of the case 0. (See Fig. 6.) The other end of said spring is secured to the inner wall or ring portion, R, at 5. (See Fig. 2.) The peripheries of the parts H H of the spool are provided with teeth ab, and when said parts are in position the hooks of the teeth a bstand in opposite directions. (See Figs. 4 and 5.)
In the upper portion of the case is a sliding or looking bar, P, which, when moved to the dotted position of Fig. 2, causes the inner end to drop down, when said end will engage with the teeth I) of the back portion of the spool, thuslocking thespool and preventing the cords c c from drawing outof the spool-case. The sliding bolt 1? is provided near its inner end with a series of fine teeth, t, and engaging with said teeth is a locking-spring, h, which holds the bar P in a locked position, and to unlock I insert a suitable key through the key-hole r of the front plate over the pin 1), then turning the key, lifting the spring h to the dotted position of Fig. 2, when the spring 8 will draw back from dotted position to the position shown in Fig. 2, moving also the locking-bolt Pback to the unlocked position of Fig. 2, when said bolt will be free from the teeth b of the spool. Then pulling outward upon the case 0, the cords c 0 will be drawn out as said spool is unwound by the cords.
I provide the front plate of the case on its inner side with a spring-pawl, K, as shown in Fig. 3. The lower end is secured to the plate and the free end is provided with a button, a, which projects outward through an opening in said plate. (See Figs. 3 and 6.) When the front plate is in position, the free end of the spring-pawl K engages with the teeth a of the front portion of the spool. It willbe observed by this arrangement that the spring-pawl K; will allow the spool to beunwoundpaying out the cordsto allow opening the sack, and as the cords are unwound from the spool said spool revolves around the shaft m, winding up the spring 8, and said spring will rewind the cords c 0 upon the spools, but is prevented while filling or emptying the bag B by the spring-pawl K engaging with the notches a of the spool.
When desirous to wind up the cords, as in closing the bag, the operator lifts up the button a, which works in the slot l of the case, freeing the spring Kfrom the notches a' of said spool, when the spool D will be rewound by cord or cords. the metal case, the spool, and
means, set forth, for reeling the cord within said case, of the locking-bolt and its spring h, said bolt adapted to engage with the toothed portion 6 of said spool, as and for the purposesset forth.
2. The combination, with a mail-bag and its closing-cord, the metal case 0, and the spool D, composed of two part-s and secured together, as setforth, having the toothed surfacesa b, as specified, of a locking-bolt, Rand spring-pawl K, said pawl and bolt adapted to engage with the toothed peripheries of said spool for looking it in its various positions, for the purposes specified.
3. In a combined mail-bag-cord case and lock,
the metal case (J, the spool D, asset forth, the
spring-pawl K, attached to said case, the free OLIVER B. YOUNG. Witnesses:
