UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE GREEN, OE CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS.
FEED-WATER H EATER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 352,464, dated November 9, 1886.
Application filed June 17, 1886. Serial No. 205,414.
.To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE GREEN, of Gorpus Christi, in the county of Nueces and State of Texas, have invented'a new and Improved Feedater Heater-for Steam-Boilers, ot' wh ich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a boiler with a feed-water heater which will serve as a spark-arrester, andwhich will also purify the water and prevent the formation of scale'in the boiler, and whereby, also, the heating-surface will be increased and fuel economized.
The invention consists of a feed-water heater composed of a series of pipes attached to halt cylindrical heads, placed diagonally in the fire-box of the boiler, and connected with the waterspace of the boiler.
The invention also consists of various parts and details and combinations of the same,as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 isa longitudinalsectional elevation of my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 00 x of Fig. 1.
The boiler A is provided with the firebox B, the fines G, and the gratebars D, of the. usual construction. In the fire-box B is placed diagonally the feed-water heater E, which conand is provided on each side with the pipes J,
(No model.)
The feed-water passes from the inlet-pipe H into the feed-water heater E, and through the same and out into the water-compartment K of the boiler by means of the pipe J.
It will be seen that thewater passing through the feed-water heater E is quickly heated, as the latter is in direct contact. with the fire on the grate-bars D. The water in the heater E is purified by being heated, the im purities settling in the head G, so that the water which passes into the water-compartment K is prevented from forming scales in the boiler. It will also be seen that the cinder-s, sparks, &c., are arrested by coming in contact with the pipes F and the heads G and G of the heater E, which .dctlect the sparks; back into the fire on the grate bars 1), which consumes the sparks. Sufficient space is left between the pipes F for the passage of the heat and smoke from the grate-bars to the lines of the boiler.
Having thus fully described my invention, claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. in a boiler, the combination of a lire-box with a feed-water heater consisting of pipes opening into half-cylindrical heads, an inletpipe connected with one head, and an outletpipe connecting the other head with the watercompartment of the boiler, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a boiler, the fire-box B, the boiler-fines O, the gratebars D, and the water-compart ment K, in combination with the feed-water heater E, consisting of the pipes F and the heads G and G, the inlet-pipe H, and the out let-pipes J, connecting the head G with the compartment K of the boiler, substantially as shown and described.
GEORGE GREEN.
