SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,370, dated November 9, 1886. Application filed June S, 1886. Serial No. 201,496. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK R. SMITH. a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Tomah, in the county of Monroe and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stump-Extractors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view showing my improved stumpextractor in position for operation. Fig. 2 is a top plan view ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional View on line x fr, Fig. 2. Fig. Il is a perspective view ofthe standard or axle. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the pulley for the drawing-rope, and Fig. 6 is an axial sectional view of the same.

My invention has relation to that class of` stump-extractors in which the winding-drum for the drawingropeisjournaled upon a standard or axle secured in a frame placed upon the ground andanchored to a stump or stake, and in which a sweep is secured to this winding-drum, and it contemplates certain improvements upon parts of the extractor for which Letters Patent N o. 318,810 were granted to me on the 26th day of May, 1885; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the standard, which is cylindrical and provided with an annular iiange, B, at its lower end, and with an eccentric iiange, C, at its upper end, the projecting portion of the said iiange extending toward the anchoringstump. The lower end of the standard is provided with a downwardly-extending tlat'portion, D, extending laterally toward the anchoring-stump, and the lower horizontal edge of this portion is provided with langesE E, projecting to both sides, while the laterally-projecting portion of the fiat portion of the standard is formed with atransverse perforation, F. Two beams, G G, are secured together by bolts H at their ends, thesaid bolts drawing the immediately inside .of the con meeting-bolt, the l said recesses forming an aperture through which the anchoring-chain K may be passed A and secured to the anchoring-stump L. A cross-bearmM, is vbolted to the under side of the ends of the beams, betweenV which the standard is held, preventing the frame formed by the ybeams from being tilted. A drum, N, isjonrnaled upon the standard, having an aperture of the saine diameter as the eccentric iiange, so that the drum may be slipped over the said ange, and thereupon revolve upon the standard, the eccentric ange preventing the drum. from being drawn up over .the end of the standard when the rope is being wound upon it. The outside of the drum is honrglass-shaped, or contracted toward its middle, so that the rope may be wound upon the drum and continually be forced toward the middle of the drum, the roundedsides of the drum allowing the rope to be wound upon the middle of the drum and preventing any chang of the rope, as the rope will not come in contact with the said sides excepting by bearing directly against them. The upper end of the drum is provided with the laterally-extending stud O and with the upwardly-projecting hook l), for theattaehment of the sweep Q, similarly to the corresponding parts in my former patent, the sweep being held to the stud by the link R, and the sweep is provided with the usual lead`pole. The
drawing-rope T is secured at one end to the drum and at the other end to the end of the frameand passes over a sheave, U, in a block, V, to which the chain lV, which Vis attached to the tree or stump to be extracted, is lsc- A cured. The fork or clevis X of this block is provided with a casing formed by twoplates,`
the said curved edges of the plates being lettere'd B.
It will be seen that by having the windingdrum shaped contracted at the middle the rope will not chafe against any projecting flanges, as it will do in the majority ot' the slump-extractors of this construction, so that the rope may strike the drum at any angle from above the drum or from below, and it will at all times be guided toward the middle of the drum without being chafed against flanges at the ends of the same.
The frame composed of the two beams and the cross-beam will allow the drum and its standard to be secured to the anchoring stump or stake at al sufficient distance from the same to allow the sweep to be revolved without the necessity ofcutting down the anchoring-stu mp,
' repaired, if damaged, the extractor consisting of few and durable pieces.
It follows that the flanged upright and the drum contracted at the middle may be used 1with other styles of stump-extractors and in different frames from the one herein described,
M and it also follows that the frame may be used with a different standard or'drum. rIhe sheave for the drawing-rope may also be used for different purposes and in dil'erent constructions of stump-extractors.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a stump-extractor, the combination of a vertical standard or axle having a flange, B, at its lower end, and having an eccentric circular flange at its upper end projecting toward the anchoring stump or stake, with a drum having a bore of' the saine diameter as the eccentric flange and revolving upon the standard or axle, as and for the purpose shown and set forth. v
2. In a stump-extractor, the combination of a vertical standard or axle having a flange at its lower end, and having an eccentric flange at its upper end projecting toward the anchoring stump or stake, with a drum having a bore of the same diameter as the eccentric flange, and revolving upon the standard and formed hour-glass-shaped, being contracted at its midle, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
3. In a stump-extractor, the combination of a standard or axle having a flat portion ex tending from the lower end, and provided with horizontal laterallyextending flanges at its lower edge, with two beams bolted at the sides said flat portion, and a winding drum or pulley, as and for the purpose shown and s`et forth.
5. In a stump-extractor, the combination of a standard for the winding-drum having a flat portion at'its lower end extending toward the anchor and provided with a transverse perforation in the said extended portion, and with laterally-projecting horizontal flanges at the lower edge, two beams clampingy the flat portion'between their ends, and having bolts passing through them and one bolt passing through the perforation in the ,fiat portion of the stand` ard, and formed with recesses in the inner sides of the ends, and an anchor-chain passed through the perforation formed by the recesses, and a winding drum or pulley, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
6. In a stump-extractor, the combination of a standard having a flange at its lower end and an eccentric circular flange at its upper end, and.- having a flat portion extending toward the anchor, and formed with horizontal laterally-projecting flanges and with a transverse perforation in the extension, a winding-drum having a sweep adapted to turn upon the standard, having a diameter equal to the diameter of the eccentric ilange, two` beams clamping the flat portion with their ends, and having connecting-bolts passing through them and through the perforated flat portion, and formed with facing-recesses in the inner sides of the other ends, a cross-beam secured under the ends of the bearn's clamping the flat portion of the standard, and an anchor-chain passed through the aperture formed by the recesses, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
7. In a stump-extractor, the combination of a pulley-clevis, a sheave journaled in the said clevis, and two plates secured to the arms of the clevis, and having meeting curved flanges at their outer edges, and having the inner edges cut out concave and sharpened, fitting inside of the edges of the sheave, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
