LUGGAGE-CARRIER FOR VELOCIPEDES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 352,331, dated November 9, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, JAMES ALFRED LAM- PLUGH, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 1 Charlotte Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, England, manufacturer, have invented Improvements in Luggage-Carriers or Combined Luggage-Carriers and Leg-Rests for Velocipedes, (for which I have applied for Letters Patent in Great Britain. No. 135-, dated the 6th day of January, 1886, and No. 2,069, dated 12th day of February, 1886; German Empire, No. P. V. 4,394, dated 10th day of March, 1886, France, No. 174,579, dated 6th day of March, 1886,) of which the following is a specification.

My invention has for its object to so construct luggage-carriers that when not in use as carriers they admit of being turned into aline with the handlebar or framing carrying them, and when in this position they can be utilized as leg-rests. Each carrier, or combined carrier and leg-rest, consists of a single swiveling limb turning horizontally upon or around a pin or pivot as a center, and which said single limb is secured to the framing of a machine by an adjustable clip, which admits of its position being changed as circumstances require. hen the limbs are required to be used as carriers,they are made to project outwardly or stand at right angles to the handle-bar or framing of a machine, like extended brackets; but when they are required to be out of the way or to be utilized as leg-rests they are turned in the longer direction of the supporting-frame, and when in this position they are out of the way as carrying bracketarms, and may then be utilized as aforesaid.

Figure 1 represents, in plan, a luggage-carrier, or a combined luggage-carrier and legrest, made according to my invention, and which said object is shown in use when applied as a carrier with the limbs projecting outwardly or at right angles to the handle-bar of a bicycle, thus forming extended and elevated brackets across and upon which a parcel or other like article may be supported and carried. It will be seen that the facing (which is of rubber) on the top side of the right-hand limb is broken off, so as to exhibit the pivot-center upon which the said limb turns in order to bring the carriers above and in a line with the handle-bar rests for the rider. .Fig. 3 is a back view of Fig. 1. carriers with a parcel strapped upon it, and Fig. 5 is a cross-section on the dotted lines A B, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is aback and side elevation of the rubber facings. Fig. 7 represents a perspective view of a handle-bar and my invention shown as a carrier, and Fig. 8 represents the same as a leg-rest. This view also shows how the luggagesecuring straps are coiled up. when out of use.

a a are carrier-limbs or leg-rests secured to the handlebar e by adjustable clips (I, and each said carrier or rest consists of a swiveling limb with arms a a", and pivoted between the two at b. Thus, when the limbs are in use as carriers, they stand out at right angles to the bar or frame which carries them, as in Fig 1; but when not in use as carriers they are turned into the longer direction of the carrying-bar, as represented in Fig. 2, and. when in this 1ast-named position they constitute legrests.

c is a limiting-stop on the top of the clipbracket d. These stops determine the fully opened and closed positions of the limbs. Thus, on the limbs being used as carriers, the stop comes against the shoulder a, but on the limb being closediit abuts against the shoulder (t d is a slightly-bowed spring interposed between the top of the open bracket or clip (I and the under side of the limb surrounding the pin b. This spring gives to the limb a stiff joint. The longer arm of the limb a has gaps or slots a, wherein long dovetail lugs f 2 on the under side of the facing f fit and are secured, as best seen in the cross-section, Fig. 5.

a is a strap-loop on the longer arm a and a is another strap-loop on the shorter arm a and to these loops the luggage-strap g is connected.

The bracket (Z is adjustable upon the handle- Fig. 4 is an end view of oneof the bar e, and is afiixed thereto in any desired po sition, as may be required, by the screw-pint and the cross-pinj, the latter passing through the stem of the former with its end forcibly impressing itself against the handle-bar, so as to press the said bar into the inside seat part, (I, of the bracket or' clip part d.

The direction of folding and unfolding of the limbs is indicated by the arrows in the respective Figs. 1 and 2.

When the appliance is to be used as a luggage-carrier, the limbs are turned into a position atright angles to the bar, which then'constitute bracket-su pports upon which luggage is carried, and when the arms of the limbs are turned into the longer direction of the handle-bar upon which they are secured, as in Fig; 2, they eonstitute'l'eg-rests;

Having-thus described myinvention, I claim as-new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a luggage-carrier for bicycles, the

combination, with the handle of the bicycle,

of a clamp embracing said handle, aplate pivotal'ly secured to said clamp, and straps or equivalent luggage-securing devices on said plate, substantially as described.

2. In a combined luggage-carrier and leg rest-,the combination, with the handle and a clamp embracing the same, of a luggage-carrying plate and leg-rest pivotally secured to said clamp and provided with an elastic facing, substantially as described.

3. The combination, with the handle 6 and grip-bracket d, having the stop 0, of the swiveled plate at, having the shoulders at a, adapted to impinge against said stop and limitthe movement of the said plate, substantially as described.
