To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN R. JoNEs, o f Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee,.and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam- Boiler Furnaces 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to steainboiler furnaces, and has for its objects to obtain a constant circulation of water below the tire,
' whereby theI same is quickly boiled and converted into steam, thus effecting a saving in fuel as well as timein getting up steam. These objects I attain by the construction lsubstantially as hereinafter described,reference being had to the accompanying drawi-ngs,in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of a furnace and boiler, partly broken away to show the application of my invention; Fig. 2,a partial plan view of the grate; and Fig. 3, a detail view showing the connection of the rear header and longitudinal pipes.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a furnace, B the mud-drum, and C the boiler provided with a steam-drum, D.
Supported within the furnace-walls on suitable braces, E, is a tubular grate composed of front and rear header pipes, F G, and a series of longitudinal pipes, H, that communicate with said headers. The pipes H have their outer ends directly connected to the front header, F, and their inner ends united by couplings a to vertical nipples b,that depend from the rear header, G, the latter being set higher than the one F,in order that said pipes H may have a pitch toward the front, as shown by Fig. l. The front header, F, has one end, c, thereof extended through the adj acent furnacewall, and at this point said header is provided with a blow-o valve, K. To the outwardlyextended end of the header F, I connect a feedpipe, L, that leads from the mud-drum B, said I'eedpipe being provided with a cut-off valve, M, and a back-pressure check-valve, N. One end, d, of the rear header, G, extends through the adjacent furnace-wall on that side opposite to the end c of the front header, F, and to this outer end of said rear header I couple a discharge-pipe, l?, that has its outlet into the boiler O, above the water-line of the latter,
said discharge-pipe being provided with a cntoff valve, R, that normally remains open, being only closed when the lire is drawn'.
When the water is let on through the feedpipe L, it tiows to the front header, F, of the grate, and lthence into the pipes H, immediately below the re, thus being quickly boiled and converted into steam. The nipples b of the rear header serve the purpose of expansionchambers for the generating steam, the latter filling the rear header, G, and escaping through the dischargepipe P into the boiler above the water-line, thus establishing a circulation and getting up steam at a rapid rate. The backpressure check-valve N prevents thewater being forced back by the generated steam, and the pipes H being pitched toward the front, such sediment as may be in said water will find lodgment in' thefront header, F.
When it is desired to'clean out the sediment that may have accumulated in the front header, the valve M is closed and the one K opened, thus permitting an escape of steam from the boiler C through the entire grate, and a carrying off of said sediment.
In tubular grates that discharge into the boiler below the water-line it has been found impossible to get a proper circulation,owing to the fact that there is a pressure of the water in two directions toward they center of the grates, and hence the hollow bars and other tubes thereof areliable to clog up with sediment, warp from their proper position, and nally burn out, while at the same time the steam made during the passage of the water through said grates is condensed assoon as it enters the boiler. n
In my invention the water circulated through the grate is converted into steam and enters the boiler above the waterline, where it is available for immediate use before the water in said boiler is sufficiently hot to generate such vapor, while at the same time the press` ure of the water is always in one direction, and hence there is no liability of the various tubes becoming clogged with sediment, especially as my invention is more particularly designed to be employed with boilers that have a mud-drum, and it will be noticed that both the feed and discharge pipes of the grate are outside the furnace away from the iire.
By the construction above described I not only effect a saving in fuel and time required for getting up steam, bnt am also enabled to generate more steam with less fuel than isordinarily the case with furnaces of the usual construction, for the reason that the water in the boiler` is being vaporized at the saine time as that circulated through the grate.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a steam-boiler furnace, a tubular grate consisting'of a transverse front header-pipe,a similar rear header-pipe that has a series of vertically-depending nipples, and a series of longitudinal pipes that unite the `front header with the nipples of the rear one, in combina` tion with a leed-water pipe connected to said front header, and a discharge-pipe united to said rear header and arranged to have its outlet into the boiler above the water-line, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a steam-boiler furnace,a tubular grate consisting of transverse front and rear headen pipes set at different elevations,the rear header being provided with a series of vertically-depending nipples, and a series of longitudinal pipes directly connected to the front header and coupled to the nipples of the rear one, in
combination with a feed-Water pipe that connects with said front header, and a dischargepipe united to said rear header and having an outlet into the boiler above the Water-line, substantially vas set forth.
3. In a steam-boiler furnace,a tubular grate consisting of transverse front and rear headerpipes, the former one of which is provided with a blow-off valve and the latter with a series of vertically-depending nipples, and a series of longitudinal pipes uniting the front header with the nipples of the rear one, in combination with a feed-water pipe connected to said front header and provided with a eutofi and back-pressure valve, and a dischargepipe united to said rear header and provided with a cut-ofi' valve, said discharge-pipe being arranged to have its outlet into the boiler above the water-line, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
