JOSEPH WATSON, or PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA.
FUMIGATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,282, dated November 9, 1886.
Appicatirn filed March 23, 1886. Serial No. 196,262. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnPH WATSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Petaluma, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in. Smoking Apparatus, .of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in smoking apparatus for extcrininating groundsquirrels, gophers, and other burrowing noX- ious animals; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of myinvention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on a plane at right angles to Fig. 2.
A represents the tire-chamber, which is preferably cylindrical in shape, and the lower portion of which forms the frustum of a cone, as at B, and the said fire-chamber has an inner wall, 0, and an outer wall, E, a space orchamberbeing thusleft between the walls surrounding the fire-chamber. Openings F are made in the inner wall, near the upper edge thereof, which communicate with the interior of the fire-chamber, and on the lower end of the said inner wall is secured av cap, G, which forms the bottom of the fire-chamber.
H represents a conical spout, which is secured on the lower edge of the outer wall of the fire-chamber, the space between the inner and outer walls of the lire-chamber communicating with the upper end of the said spout.
I represents a short horizontal tube, which is open at both ends, and passes through the walls of the fire-chamber near the bottom thereof, and the said tube is provided at its outer end with the removable cap or plug I.
K represents a tube, which is secured on the inner side of the fire-chamber, and ex tends. vertically therein, the said tube being open at its upper and lower ends.
To the upper end of the fire-chamber is hinged a cover, L, which is provided with a hook or catch, L, for securing it to the firechamber when closed thereon, and through the said cover passes a vertical pipe, M, the
' lower end of which communicates with the upper end of the pipe K when the cover is closed.
on the upper end of the pipe M is located a double-ended bellows, N, which is provided with two valves, 0, but one of which is shown,
which admit air into opposite ends of the bellows alternately, and the bellows are also provided with openings P, which communicate with the upper end of the pipe M. The fire-chamber is provided with suitable han dles, R, by means of which it may be readily carried about.
The operation of myinvention is as follows: A fire is kindled in the fire-chamber and supplied with any suitable fuel which will create a dense smoke, and sulphur or any other poisonous compounds or chemical will be added thereto, if desired. The discharge end of the spout H is then inserted in the hole in the ground made by the squirrel or other animal to be exterminated and the bellows are operated, which causes strong currents of air to pass down through the pipes M and K into the fire-chamber and create active combustion therein and force the smoke therefrom through the openings in its inner wall into the annular space or chamber, and from thence down through the spout into the hole in theground. Continued operation of the bellows causes the smoke and fumes to permeate every portion of the underground passage or burrow and kill the'animals therein.
The function of the tube I and the cap I is to permit the fire to be lighted without having to raise the cover of the fire-chamber.
By employing a compound or double-ended bellows a constant draft of air is caused to pass through the apparatus and to force out dense volumes of smoke and fumes therefrom.
Having thus described my invention, I c1aim g 1. The combination of the fire-chamber A, having the openings F near its upper end,the outer casing, E, surrounding the firechamber, and thereby forming the chamber 0, the-spout H, secured to the'lower end of the casing E, the tube 1, passing from the fire-chamber out through the outer casing and having the cap or plug, and the pipe K, for conducting a blast of air to the bottom of the fire-chamber, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
2. In a smoking apparatus, the combination of an outer shell, a fire chamber having a closedbottom and inclosed within the outer shell and out of contact therewith to form an intermediate space or chamber, the openings F, formed in the fire-chamber near its upper end and communicating with the chamber of the fire-box and the intermediate space, aspout attached to the lower end of the outer shell beneath the fire-chamber and having an open contracted discharge end to conduct the smoke, &c., from the intermediate space or chamber into the hole or burrow, and a bellows on the upper end of .the fire-chamber, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
3. In a smoking apparatus, the combination of an outer tapering shell, a fire-chamber having a closed lower end and the openings F in its upper end, and arranged within and out of contact with the outer shell to form an intermediate space or chamber, a conical discharge-spout connected .to the lower end of 25
