SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,248, dated November 9, 1886.

following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved lock-up. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on line 00 0c in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the cross-bars. 1

The object of my invention is to provide means for quickly locking up forms in achase and readily changing" to forms of ditferent sizes and proportions. My invention consists in two bars slotted lengthwise, two cross-bars fitted to the slots of the longitudinal bars, the longitudinal and cross bars each being provided with two sets of ratchet-teeth on their outer faces, each set of ratchet-teeth upon each bar projecting' toward the center of the bar, and in the combination,with the set of toothed bars, of rightangled corner-blocks provided with ratchetteeth for engaging the teeth of the bars, and in an expansible corner-block adapted to one of the corners of the lock-up, for contracting on lhe fornnthe frame consisting of the bars.

The longitudinal bars A A, forming part of the frame of the lock-up, are each provided with longitudinal slots a, extending nearly to their ends, and the ends of the bars A A are slotted in the same direction, to receive a tongue, I), on the inner edge of the chase B. The adjacent faces of the bars A A are plane; but each bar is provided with two oppositelyarranged sets of ratchet-teeth, c, which pitch toward the center of the bar. a of the bars A A are inserted the cross-bars G C, whose ends are enlarged and slotted to receive the tongue I) of the chase B. .The adjacent faces of thebars G O are plane, and their outer faces are provided with oppositely-arranged sets of ratchet-teeth, c, similar to the ratchet-teeth of the bars A A.

To three of the angles, between the bars A A O O, are fitted triangular blocks D, having ratchet-teeth c on adjoining faces, whichare at right angles to each other. To the fourth angle, between the longitudinal and transverse bars is fitted an expansible triangular block, D, formed of the two sections (2, provided with ratchet-teeth c", and a wedge, e, inserted between the two sections d, and adapted to force the two sections apart.

The action of my improved lock-up is as follows: The form being placed in the opening E between the bars A A G O, the bars are moved forward into contact with the sides of the form, when the triangular blocks D are placed between the bars, and the expansible block D is placed in the fourth angle. 'By pressing the wedge 6 between the block-sections d the block-sections are forced apart, carrying the bars A C against the end and side of the form, and these bars act as levers, with the blocks D as fulcrums.

While the chase B,provided with the tongue b, is used in connection with my improved lock-upon some presses the.beds of which are perpendicular, it is not vital to its efficiency, as in the case of larger forms, or forms worked on cylinder-presses, no chase will be required, as the form lies flat upon the bed of the press, and consequently the ends of the longitudinal bars A A and the'cross-bars G U need not be slotted.

My improved lockup presents the following advantages: It saves the time usually lost in sorting out the quoins, furniture, and sidesticks to lock up with, it saves the expense of these quoins, and it does awaywith the wooden furniture and side-sticks commonly used. v

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1 The combination of the longitudinally-slotted bars A A, each provided with sets of ratchet teeth 0, which, are oppositely arranged with respect to each other, the transverse bars 0 0, received in the slots of the bars A, and provided with sets of ratchetteeth 0, which are oppositely arranged with respect to each other, the triangulanlolocks D, provided with ratchet-teeth o, and the expansible block D, formed of sections (I, having ratchet-teeth ,0, and a wedge, 0, adapted to force the-sections d apart, substantially as herein shown and described,
