Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 9, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, WESTERN D. MARK HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Friar Point, in the county of Ooahoma, State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tire- Shrinkers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tire shrinkers.
One object is to provide a comparatively simple, inexpensive, durable, efficient and positively operated device of the nature stated.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a tire shrinker embodying such characteristics that the shrinking may be done at any desired point without employing heat and preventing kinking or buckling or both during the operation.
With these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combina tion and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended-claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details may be made, within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail transverse sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the sections of the supplemental bed plate.
' Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference character 1 designates a fixed bed plate having each end provided with a head 2 and 3, the
upper face of the plate being arranged upon a curve and provided in its upper face with a tapering groove 4 and 5 at each end, each tapering groove having a screw-threaded perforation 6 leading thereinto through the corresponding end or head of the bed plate for a purpose presently explained. This bed plate is arranged in bifurcations 7 of the end supporting members 8 and the supporting members 8 may have their feet 9 pierced by any suitable means to hold them and the bed plate firmly upon a floor or other suitable place.
Sections 10 and 11 are arranged for sliding movement upon the upper face of the bed plate 1, these sections serving as a supplemental bed plate. These sections are of curved form corresponding to the curvature of the upper face of the bed plate 1 and each has a tapering groove 12 in its under face having its taper arranged directly opposite to the taper of the corresponding grooves 4 and 5 in the upper face of the heads of the main bed plate and the corresponding grooves of the sections of the main bed plate receive a follower block 12. Since the sections 10 and 11 slide upon the bed plate 1, I provide the under face of each of the sections with a tongue 13 designed to fit in a groove 14 of the bed plate 1 to prevent sidewi'se movement of the sections.
The u per face of each section 10 and 11 is provide with a groove 15 and 16 respectively which taper from their inner ends and are gradually inclined upwardly therefrom to their outer ends where they merge into the surfaces of the blocks and the side walls of the grooves are inclined and converge toward their outer ends. At the inner end of each of the grooves 15 and 16 of the sections, there is formed a recess 17 which aline to receive a tire supporting plate 18 and since these sections are moved toward each other in the operation of the device, I provide the inner end of each of them with a bore 19 for the reception of the corresponding ends of the helica spring 20 which tends to force the sections away from each other. In order to force these sections toward each other, I provide heavy screw bolts 21 and 22 which extend through the aforesaid screw-threaded perforations 6 in the respective heads 2 and 3 of the main base plate for engagement with the corresponding follower blocks 12 which latter are disposed between the corresponding tapering grooves of the bed plate and the sections 10 and 11. As these screws are manipulated, the sections 10 and' 11 are forced toward each other and in order to facilitate the movement of the bolts 21 and 22 to operate the sections as stated, I provide the outer end of each screw bolt with a ratchet wheel 23 and mount adjacent thereto an operating lever 24 provided with a pawl 25 for engagement with the corresponding ratchet wheel so that as the levers are operated backwardly and forwardly, the screws 21' and 22 are forced inwardly of the bed plate or outwardly thereof. I also provide each screw rod 21 and 22 with a hand wheel 26.
It will now be understood that the wheel 27 has its felly laced in the tapering grooves 15 and 16 of tie sections 10 and 11 of the supplemental bed plate and upon the tire supporting plate 18. Now in order to hold thewheel in proper position in the sections, I rovide a U-shaped clamping member 28 w ose legs 29 and 30 straddle the sides of the sections and the base plate with their extremities provided with alining openings 30 for the engagement therein of a lever 31 whose under face at its inner end is notched to engage the bottom of the opening in the corresponding leg of the U-shaped clamp and is also provided with a pivoted dog 32 designed to have its free extremity engaged in the teeth 33 of the corresponding leg of the clamp. A clamping screw 34 is engaged through the bight portion of the clamping member and bears against the felly of the wheel and when turned serves effectually to hold the wheel upon the device, it being understood, that the notches in the legs of the U-shaped member and in the levers 31 serve as a means whereby the clamping device may be arranged upon wheels having different sizes of felly. It will be seen that the tendency of the outer end of the levers 31 is to rise as the screw 34 is turned'but this movement is prevented by the dog 32 and the said screw allowed to exert pressure upon the felly of the wheel. 1 A
To further hold the tire firmly I provide suitable tapering wedges 35 which are provided with teeth '36 and designed to engage in the tapering grooves 15 and 16 of the sections 10 and 11 to firmly engage the tire of the wheel and to carry said tire forward to upset it in the space between the two slides.
What is claimed is:
In a tire shrinker, the combination with a base, and wheel supporting sections movable upon the base and arranged to clamp the tire to be shrunk, of an inverted U-shaped clamlping member having its legs straddling t e sides of the said sections and the sides of the base and provided at their extremities with alining openings, levers having their under edges of rack formation, said levers being engaged through the o enings and having their rack edges co-actlng with the lower edges of the openings, thelegs of the clamping member being of rack formation, dogs pivoted to the levers and engageable inter-- changeably with the rack teeth of the legs of the clamping member, and a clamping screw threaded through the connecting portion of the U-shaped clamping member and adapted to bear against the felly of the wheel supported upon the wheel supporting sections substantially as described.
