.To all whom it ImtLz/,concerm l Be it known` that I, JOHN E. WOOTTEN, of the city and county of' Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotive- Boilers, of `which improvements therfollowing is a specification. p
My improvementsmore particularly relate to locomotive-boilers ofthe Wide lire-box type, Io instances of which are illustrated in my Letters Patent No. 192,725, 'July 3, 1877; No. 254,581, March 7, 1882, and No. 291,120, J anuuary 1, 1884; and its object is to enable the advantages of such type, in affording a largely- I 5 vincreased grate-area without undue elevation of the center of gravity of the boiler, to be realized without necessarily providing a combustion-chamber within the waist ofthe boiler. To this end my invention, generally stated,
2o-consists in the combination, with a locomotive-boiler having a fire-box extended laterally beyond its shell, of a fire-bridge located 'wholly within the re box and supported above the grate thereof in such relation vto the m2 5 tube-sheetas to form a space or chamber in the rear thereof, which is closed at its bottom and open -at its top for the free passage ofthe products of combustion from the fire-box to the tubes. w
The improvements claimed are hereinafter fully set forth.

'f The several modifications of my invention herein described, each of which embodies in a form adapted to practical operation its essential features, are illustrated as applied in a lo- 6o comotive-boiler having its cylindrical Waist or barrel 1 tted with a series offre-tubes, 2, which extend in the ordinary manner from the smoke-box 3 to the fire-box 4. The fire-box is so located vrelatively to the Waist as to be entirely above the driving-wheels of the engine, and its bottom may be either, as shown, d substantially in the same horizontal plane as the bottom line of the waist, or be entirely above the same, as preferred. extended laterally beyond the Waist and the planes of the driving-wheels to any desired extent within the maximum width admissible for passage over the road, as in previous con- 4 structions of the wide fire-box type.
In boilers of this type as heretofore con-- structed. provision for the prevention of the passage of unconsumed fuel into the tubes has consisted in a fire-.bridge extending across the rear of a` combustion-chamber formed within 8o the waist Aat the end thereof adjacent to the fire-box. Under my present invention said combustion-chamber and fire-bridge in the waist are dispensed with, the tubes being made of correspondingly-greater length, and extend- 8 5 ing, as in the ordinary locomotive-boiler, to the tube-sheet 5. The fire-bridge 7 rests upon and is supported by a plate, 9, which extends from its front side to the tube-sheet 5 upon or closely adjacent to the top line of the grate 6, and closes at bottom the space S in front of the fire-bridge, thereby preventing the passage of cold air from the ash-pan into the tubes, and making the space between the crown-sheet 10 and the top of the fire-bridge the only avenue of communication between the rear portion of the nre-box, in which the fuel is contained, and the tubes. The supporting-plate 9 is held in position by suitable lugs or bearers, l1, secured to the fire-box sheets. rlhe ends of'the fire-bridge abut against the inside of the fire-box, their distance apart being either equal to the entire inside width of the fire-box, or to a distance less than said inside width and greater than the diameter of the waist, so that in all cases the hre-bridge shall be completely interposed between the rear ends of the tubes and the portion of the grate in the rear of the fire-bridge on which the fuel is carried in the operation of the boiler, so as to serve throughout its entire extent as a barrier to the passage of fuel into the tubes.
It will be obvious that while my invention enablesa combustion-chamber within the waist of the boiler to be dispensed with, such a chamber may, yif deemed advisable, be employed, and my improvements are equally adapt-able to locomotive-boilers provided with the same. x
The specific form and position of the firebridge may be varied in man yparticulars Without departing from' the spirit and principle of operation of my invention, and modifications thereof in such particulars are shown in the drawings. Thus, as illustrated in Figs. l to 3, the nre-bridge, which is vertical and is rectangular both in vertical and in horizontal section,extends completely across the fire-box, abutting at its ends against the side walls thereof and providing a combustion-space of the full width of the fire-box. As shown in the remaining figures, the lire-bridge is curved or segmental in horizontal section,each of its ends fitting against the tube-sheet 5 at a distance apart greater than the diameter of the waist. A fire-bridge having a central portion parallel to the tube-sheet, and two inclined sides eX- tending thereto from the central portion ,would be an equivalent construction.
The fire-bridge of Figs. 4 to 6 is vertical, and those of Figs. 7 to 9 and 10 to l2 are in cach case rcarwardlyinclined from their lower to their upper surfaces, thereby increasing the volume of the combustion-space 8 relatively to that afforded by a vertical lire-bridge.
The nre-bridge of Figs. 10 to 12 further differs from the others illustrated in the particular of abutting at its bottoni against the tubefsheet, which construction may be adopted where a minimum reduction of great area is considered desirable.
Suitable means may be provided for the injection of currents of heated air, or of air and steam,into the combustion-space S for the purpose of promoting and perfecting combustion and the prevention of smoke; but the same do not constitute part of my present invention, and, so far as they may embody novel and patentable features, will form the subject of a subsequent application or applications.
My invention, while retaining to a substantial degree the advantageous features of wide fire-box boilers of the construction which has been heretofore approved in practical service, affords the advantages of a reduction in cost and an increased amount of area of tube-heating surface relatively thereto. The fire-bridge can be readily applied and fitted in position and is conveniently accessible for renewal and repair, and the grate-area attainable in boilers of this type is so ample that no objection results from such curtailment thereof as is involved in locating the fire-bridge and combusv tion-space within the fire-box and above a portion of the grate.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, in a locomotive-boiler, of a laterally-extended lire-box having a grate at or near the lower line of the waist of the boiler, and a firebridge located wholly within the f1rebox and above the grate and extending upwardly from the plane of the grate in rear of and out of contact with the tube-sheet, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a locomotive-boiler, of a laterally-extended fire-box having a grate at'or near the lower line of the waist of the boiler, and a fire-bridge located wholly within the fire-box and above the grate, and extending upwardly from the plane of the grate, said fire-bridge forming the rearward boundary of acombustion space or chamber' adjacent to the tube-sheet, which space is closed at bottom and open at top for the free passage of gases to thc tubes, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in a locomotive-boiler, of a laterally-extended fire-box, and a firebridge located wholly therein at and above the grate-level, and of greater width than the diameter of the waist of the boiler, substantially as set forth.
