"UNITED STATS PATENT *OFFICE.

CASTER.
SPECFICATION fotming part of Letters Patent No. 352,209, dated Noveinber 9, 1886.
Application filed September 30, 1885. Renewed J une 525, 1886. Serial No. 206,271. (No model.)
in Casters; and we do hereby declare the fol-' lowing to be a full, clear, and exact descriptien of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. a
Car invention relates to an improvement in casters;
Hitherto it has been customary to construct hall-castors by providi11g a metallic chamber of sufficient depth to receive a little more than one-half the ball, and to continue the metal upwardly toform a socket adapted to receive the redced' end 0f'the leg, the end of the leg resting on the top of the metallic chamber, and the whole being secured to the leg by a transverse screw or pin, or simply by wedging the end of the 1eg into the soc et. The resu1t has-been to cause undue strain on the end of the leg, the ball being located wholly below it,and when the bearing has become worn it has rendered the caster as a whole useless.
The object of our present invention is to provide a caste'r which will admit of the ball being placed to a considerable extent within the end of the wooden leg, and which Will furnish a convenient and effective means for securing the cap to the leg without exposin the fastening screw or pin to view.
A further object is to provide a casterwhich shall be ornamental, and in which the part subject to the greatest wear can be replaced' at a slightexpense, and Which' shall be quite 1nexpensnve.
With these ends in view our invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as Will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the caster applied to a leg angular shaped in construction. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view,[and Fig. 3 is a vertical section, through the center of the bal].
A represents the wooden leg of a table or any other article of fnrniture to which a caster is comnionly applied. In the end of the zone of the ball l'ocated between a great circle.
thereon and a parall'el circle the thickness of the plate C therefrom. The edges of the plate 0 are turned up to fit and embrace the sides of the leg, as shown at D, and the plate 0 and.
sides D combine to form a cap for the end of the leg.
The cap 0 D may be formed by pressing a sheet of metal into the described shape; or it niay be formed by soldering the plate 0 t0 a plate shaped to form the sides D; or a thin sheet of metal may be pressed into the shape .0 D and re-enforced by a thick plate the s'hape of the end of the leg soldered to the inside of the plate 0. The sides D are eut at the top into ornamental shapes, as shown at d, and to complete the. ornamental efle6t we provide a finishing-edge, E, embracing the leg a short distance above the top of the side D, and pro- .vided with depending points or other similar ornamental design.
For'the prpose ot securing the cap 0 D to the leg, the plate 0 is provided near its four corners With screw-holes F, countersunk to bring the heads of the serew flush with the bottom of the plate.
The ball-rollerG having been placed in position within the shell b, the cap (1 D looks it secnrely in place. The ballG should be made of 'some hard woodlignum-vit, for example or it may be formed of metal, in which case the wear upon the shell I) would be of slight consequence, as the shelLcould be renewed at a trifiing cost.
The leg may be round or oval or any desired angular shape in cross-section, and the cap befifitted thereto With the same advantages as in the rectangular form shown.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The caster consisting, essentially, of the hemispheriezfl shell set 111 the end of the 1eg, specification in the presence of two subscribthe ball-roller, and the cap with its perfo- 111g witnesses.
rated end plate and ornamental sides, said JOEL F. TERRIL.
cap ,beng provided with perforations through XVALLACE SIMONSON. 5 the end plate, adapted to receive fastening- \Vitnessesz screws, substantially as set: forth. E. L. BREWER,
In testmony whereof we have signed this L. G. BREWER.
