Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BALLOU, OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
N E'C KTI E\-FASTE.N ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0.352.,109, dated November 9, 1886. Application filed Amy 19, (sec. Serial No. 202,688. 1N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN BALLOU, of Somerville, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain I'mprovements in N ecktie-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for securing a necktie upon the person of'the wearer; and it consists in the employment of a hook secured to the necktie and adapted to engage with the neckband of the collar or shirt, and used in connection with an elastic loop or spring, or without such loop or spring.
In thedrawings accompanying, in which similar letters refer to similar parts, Figure lv shows a general perspective view of the device;
, Fig. 2, a sectional view; Fig. 3, a'plan View of in the throat of the hook, with the the shield or base frame of a necktie.
A represents a shield or base-frame of a necktie of a common form. which is secured an elastic loop, 0. The bight of the loop 0 is passed through the holes d and e in the shield A, and over the hook, resting point of the hook outward from" the shi ld.
In attaching the necktie to the person, the hook being at the upper edge of the tieand turned inward,it is permitted to hook over the neckbandof the collaror shirt, and thus the tie is held in its proper place, the elasticity of the loop permittingthe proper adjustment of the tie. V
B is a hook, to
The distinguishing characteristic of this device is the hook attached to the shield in a manner to permit its adjustment in a direct vertical line, or a line transversely with the shield,and with only slight lateral motion, and this is produced by attaching the elastic to the lower part of the hook, then passing the bight through the holes (I and e, and the loop finally over the throat of the hook, as at '5, and thus the hook is held to the tie and with the results described.
I am aware that a hook elastically secured to a necktie has been employed with substaniially the object for which I employ it. Therefore I do not claim, broadly, the use of a hook elastically secured to the necktie; but
I claim A necktie-fastener consisting of a hook secured by an elastic connection to the shield, the elastic consisting of a loop secured to the lower end of the hook, the bight of the loop .being passed through apertures in the shield and over the throat of the hook, all arranged JOHN BALLOU.
