UNITEDr STATED-S PATENT' OFFICE. v
JOHN I. WILsON, OF POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK, AssIGNOn To GERAL- D'IllE B. WILSON,
OFjsAME PLACE. e'
CARC'OUPLI'NG.
i SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,104, dated November 2, 1 88'6.
y Application led pril 27, 1886. Serial No. 200,346. (No model.)
- Bc it known that I, JOHN P. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and nseful'lmprovementsin Car-Couplers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to car-couplers;` and it consists in the construction andarrangement of the partsA of the same, which will be more fully hereinafter described, and definitely pointed out in the claims. Y -v My `invention is an improvement on the coupler shown'and described in the application of J. G. Slater, filed February 20, 1886,
. Serial N o. 192,645.
The objectwof my invention is to provide an automatic coupler in which the coupling-pin shall have an easy but positive action, which is simple in its construction, strong and durable, and cheaply manufactured. -I attain these objects by the construction of coupler illustrated in the accompanying drawings, where in like letters of reference indicate similar parts inthel several views, and in which- Figurel is a perspective view of a drawhead with my improved, coupler applied thereto.v Fig. 2 is alongitudinal vertical section of my'improved coupler, showing the coupling-pin in two positions in dotted lines. Fig. 31s a view similar to'Fig. 1, showing the coupling-pin in a lockingposition in dotted lines. l Fig. 4 is an elevation of the link-pin. `A represents the draw-head; B,fthe. drawbar. vertical 1ongitudinal`slot,b, through which the coupling-pin D passes, said longitudinal vertical slot having transverse slots d at the top thereof, through which the wrist-pins d3, on the coupling-pin D, enter a camway, C, formed transversely to the longitudinal slot b, the walls of said camway being formed of varying curves and inclines, with the .front wall perpendicular. These several forms of construction were fully illustrated and described in the application aforesaid, my improvement thereon being-as follows:
The draw-head A is provided with al The front wall, o, is form-ed perpendicularly to the pointe', where the wall is curved to form a seat for the wristpins di, when the couplingpin D is in alocking position. From the point c a wall, 1, extends upward on an 'incline to the point 2, from whence a short wall, 3, extends to the point 4, which is inclined into the camway at about right angles to the wall 1. From the point 4 to the point 6'ashort wall is formed, and from the point6 to the point 8a slight indentation isl formed. From the points 2, 4, 6, and 8 the Wall is constructed in the form' of a projection, `thel under side of which `acts as a stop and prevents the coupling-pin from passing up through theopening b' by a sudden jar or ycommotion of the link E. From the point l8 an inclined lwall extends upward, which merges into and forms one wall of the transverse opening b.
As heretofore stated, the wall c from the point c to the poi-nt 410 is perpendicular, and from the point 10 to the point 12 the wall is in the forni of a rounded projection, 13, and from said projection a concaved curved rest, 15, is formed up to the point 14. From the point 14 a slightly upward curved wall, 17, is
less amount of incline, so that its full end will strike against the inclined face of the drawhead A with which it is'desired to couple.
The coupling-pin D is formed with a single projection, 19, on its lower portion, adjacent toits lower front inclined edge. This projection forms an indentatiomwhich engages with the front wall, b2, of the longitudinal vertical slot'b when the pin-is iii a coupled position. The lower front-end of the said pin is further braced against the lower front wall of the longitudinal vertical slot b; The rear wall of said loo i slot t is formed on an incline and of a contour similar to the rear side of the couplingpin. The coupling-pin D is preferably made Hat, so that the said longitudinal vertical slot through which the said pin passes can be of narrow construction, being just wide enough to allow the passage of the said pin D, thereby causing the wristpins d3 to accurately engage with the cainway C. The front wall of the aperture b is slightly inclined toward the front of the head, the coupling pin D resting against the same in a slightly forward inclined position, thus having a more securely-braced position against the action of thelink E. An aperture, d, is formed near the top of the coupling-pin D, in which a small chain, cable, or rope, d, is secnred, and extends down through staples c a, secured to the side of the drawhead A, and has a ring, di, attached to its lower end, which is of such a size as to prevent it from passing through the said staples a a., thereby always keeping the cord d in one place, and in a convenient position for use.
rPhe cord d is of snilicient length to allow the coupling-pin to be removed from the drawhead and at the same time be secured in the drawhead. 4,
The operation of my improved coupler is as follows: The pin yD being arranged in a lowered position, with its wrist-pins d resting in the portion of the wall c", the incoming link E of another ear strikes the lower inclined front edge of the said coupling-pin, and raising it in the vertical longitudinal slot I), the wrist-pins d3 moving upward in the caniway C, allowing the link to pass under the pin. The couplingpin then drops down by gravity through 4the link and holds it in a coupled position. Then it is desired to unconple the link, the pin D is drawn upward and the link allowed to pass out. Vhen the pin D is suddenly forced upward when struck by an incoming link in coupling, the said pin will always remain in position in the vertical longitudinal slot b, in consequence ofthe wrist-pins d remaining in engagement wi h the caniway, and when the pin rises these wrist-pins strike against the projection formed in the rear wall of said camway, between the points 2 and 4, and prevent the said wrist-pins from passing up into the transverse slots b. By the construction of the rear wall from the points 2 to 4, 4 to G, 6 to 8,
and thence up to the transverse entrances b', as described, the coupling-pin D will be admitted to the vertical longitudinal slot Z1, with the wrist-pins d in engagement with the carnway, in one position only, and that is when the front portion ofthe said link-pin is toward the front of the draw-head. By this means the link-pin cannot be inserted in the said slot and caniway, except in its operative position. When it is desired to place the couplingpin in a raised position, the said pin is drawn upward until the wrist-pins thereon engage with the seat '1.5, formed in the upper wall. When the pin is in this position, the lower point clears the link-recess 18, andthe link is left free to enter or withdraw from the said recess in making ii'yi ng switches, or for any other purpose desired.
lt is obvious that the walls ol' the camway may he constructed curved or straight, as may the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my inventiomwhatl claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a car-coupler, the combination, with a draw-head having a Vertical longitudinal slot therein, of a cainway extending transversely from each side oi" the said vertical longitudinal slot, said eamway having irregular: walls with a rest formed in the upper portion anda projection in the rear portion thereof, a linkpin having wrist-pins engaging with the verhorizont al link recess, substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.
2. In a car-coupler, the combination, with a draw-head having a vertical longitudinal slot therein and a calnway extending transversely from each side of said slot, of a iiat couplingpin engaging with said slot and eamway and a cord secured near the top of said couplingpin, passing down through staples on the outside of the d raw-head, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
