CHIN-REST FOR VlOLlNS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,952, dated November 2, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM VAUGHAN ARTHUR, of Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Chin-Rest for Violins, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved chin-rest for violins which is simple in construction, does not interfere with the tone of the instrument, and can easily be attached to the instru ment and held securely.

The invention consists in the special construction of the chiiri'est, as will be fully set forth and described hereinafter.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a perspective view ofthe lower part of a violin provided with my improved chinrest. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improved chin-rest. Fig. 3 is a detail section-.11 view of the end of the violin, showing the po sition of the chin rest.

The chin-rest A is made of hard wood or other suitable material, and has its top surface hollowed out, to adapt it to receive that part of t-hejaw which is usually rested on the top of a violin, at thebutt-end of the same.

At one end the rest'A has an extension, B, provided with a longitudinal slot, 0, extending from top to bottom, and a .recess, D, in the inner face at the bottom edge. The extension B is provided with a laterallyprojecting lug, E, at the outer end. On the inner surface of the extension B a strip, F, of felt, leather, or other soft iinatorial, is secured to prevent chafing of the end of the violin, and a like strip is preferably secured in the recess D.

G is the violin; H, the tail-piece; J, the tailpiece cord or string, and K the button for holding said cord.

To adjust or fasten the chin rest on the violin the strings are loosened, the tail-piece string is above the belly of the violin, and is not in contact with any of the vibrating parts. It is in contact with the extended edge of the belly only, and in contact with the end of the tailpin.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A chin-rest, A, for violins, having the neck B projecting from one end, the neck having a vertical string-receiving slot, 0, at right angles to the upper surface of the rest, substantially as set forth.

2. The chin-rest A, having the extension B,

provided with the longitudinal slot 0, and the recess D in one side at the bottom of said slot, substantially as herein shown and described.

3. The chin-rest A, having the extension B, provided with the slot 0, the recess D, and the lug E, substantially as herein shown and described.

4. The combinaliomwith the violin G, the tailpiece H, the tailpiece string J, and the button K, of the chin-rest A, having the slot C, the recess D, and the lug E, the string J being passed through the slot 0, the button K passing into the recess D, and the lug E extending over the top plate of the violin, substantially as herein shown and described.
