STEAM-GENERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,945, dated November 2, 1886.
Application filed July 19, 1886. Serial No. 208,423. ,(No model.) I
To all whomjt may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY STUTSMAN, of East Portland, in-the county of Multnomah and the State of Oregon, and DAVID COLE, of Portland, in the county ofMultnomah and the State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Steam-Generator, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to provide a IO new and improved steam-generator which'is simple in construction, raises the temperature of the water quickly, and prevents the formation of scale in the boiler.
The invention consists of a cylinder placed "I 5 inside of the boiler and provided with an annular partition, of radial tubes attached to the said cylinder and each having a horizontal partition, and of pipes which connect with the cylinder and also form a support for the same. The invention also consists of various parts and details and combinations of the same, as
will be fully set forth and described hereinafter, l
and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
inwhich similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a central sectional elevation of our improvement. Fig.2 is a sectional plan view of'the same on the line m m of Fig. 1, and Fi 3. is a plan view through one of the radial tu es.
The closed cylinder A is placedcentrally in the boiler-shell B, and forms, with the latter, a heating-space, 0,.into which project thehorizontal tubes D, secured radially to the cylinder A. Said tubes D are closed at their outer ends and open into the cylinder A at their inner ends. In each of these tubes D is placed 0 ahorizontal partition, E, having a curved outer end, E, which establishes communication between the upper and lower parts of the tube D. Theinner end, E ,0f each partitionE projects beyond the respective tube D, is twisted 5 at right angles to the horizontal part of said partition E, and extends close to the annular partition or cylinder F, which is placed inside of and is secured tothe cylinder A, and is open at the top and bottom. A short distance above the upper edge of the annular partition F is A, near its bottom, and connect at their lower ends with the circular pipe J, placed around the grate-bars H, between the latter and the shell B. The supply-pipe K passes through the shell B and the cylinder A, and opens into the annular partition Fa short distance below the top of the same. The shell B is provided with the usual smoke-stack, B, fuel-doors, &c. and the cylinder A isprovided with the usual steam-outlet pipe, safety-valves, 850.
The operation is as follows: The cold water, which enters the annular partition F by means of the supply-pipe K, descends toward the bot; tom and is heated by the fire on the grate-bars H, and then passes into the space between the annular partition Fand the cylinder A. From there it rises either directly upward or passes first into the lower parts of the lower tubes, D,
to the outer ends of thesame, and then'ascends into the upper parts of said tubes through the curved openings E in the partition-plates E, and out of the tubes to the annular space and to the tubes next above until it reaches the edge of the annular partition F, over which it flows, passing again into the annular partition F. The curved flange G prevents the water from splashing against the dome of the cylinder A, and it also directs the flow of the water from the outside of the annular partition F to the inside of the same.-
The water is very rapidly heated during its passage'through the numerous radial tubes D, as the heat from the grate-bars Hpasses around all the tubes before passing to the smoke-stack B of the boiler shell.-
.It will be seen that all the sediment flows from the cylinder A into the tubes I, and finally settles in the circular pipe J, placed .in the bottom of the boiler-shell Having thus fully describedour invention,
we claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent-- 1. In a steam-generator, the combination of a boiler-shell with a closed cylinder supported above the grate-bars inside of the boiler-shell,
an annular partition placed inside of said cy1- inder, and partitioned tubes extending radially from said cylinder between the latter and the boiler-shell, substantially as shown and de- 5 scribed.
2. In a steam-generator, the combination of the boiler-shell B and the grate-bars H with the cylinder A, the pipes I, and the annular pipe J, which pipes I and J support said cylinder A, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a steam-generator, the combination of the cylinder A and the annular partition F with the radial tubes D and the partitions E, substantially as shown and described.
15 4. In a steam-generator, the combination of the cylinder A and the annular partition F with the radial tubes D and the partitions E, each having a curved outer end, E, and the rectangular inner end, E substantially as 20 shown and described.
5. In a steam-generator, the combination of the cylinder A and the annular partition F with the curved flange G,substantially as shown and described.
6. In a steam-generator, the boiler-shell B, 25
