DISPLAY ADVERTISEMENT BORDER BOXES Filed Nov. 14, 1968 FIG. 2. BY W3' w@ ATTORNEY United States Patent Office 3,519,288 DISPLAY ADVERTISEMENT BORDER BOXES Shirley Clarence Sears, 4927 13th Ave. N., St. Petersburg, Fla. 33710 Filed Nov. 14, 1968, Ser. No. 776,315 Int. Cl. G0915 23/10 U.S. Cl. 283-56 2 Claims ABSTRACT F THE DISCLOSURE A means for producing a box or border for use in the rapid production of newspaper and magazine display advertising.
BACKGROUND' OF TH-E INVENTION Field of the invention In the production of newspapers and magazines, hot type and cold type are the two methods of producing display advertising. My invention is designed for use in the production of cold type advertisements and comprises a set of sheets on which border boxes are preruled to provide a means for rapidly and eiciently constructing the advertisement border.
Description of the prior art The cold type method utilizes type on lm and photographs taken of advertisement details that are built by paste-up artists. These men, under the common practice, build a replica of an advertisement by first constructing a box or border of thin tape in which the details of the advertisment are placed. My invention eliminates many of the problems of this time consuming procedure by providing a rapid and accurate means of constructing the border through the use of pads or pre-ruled border boxes that are provided with a scale and an extra border rule which can be placed across the scale marks to produce a border box of the desired length. The hot type method, which is not applicable to the present method, uses cut metal in its production.
The closest prior art of which I am aware is U.S. Pat. No. 1,532,379, issued Apr. 7, 1925 to D. C. Carter. The Carter patent discloses a dummy lay-out for advertisers which consists of a stock supply of pre-printed sheets representing, in the form of strips or blocked out portions, different type set-ups and lengths of lines. From these pre-printed sheets, dummy lay-outs can be made by selecting and combining, on a separate single sheet, the proper number of strips or blocked out portions to thus give the advertiser or publisher -an idea of the final appearance of the copy. The Carter device is used to indicate to publishers and advertisers the general appearance of the -nal copy but does not provide a means to assist the make-up artists in producing the box or border in which the details of the advertisement are placed as provided in my lay-out set.
SUMMARY The object of my invention is to provide a stock supply of pre-ruled sheets which can be utilized to quickly and efficiently construct the borders of newspaper and magazine display advertisements. My invention, which I shall call Mak-A-Box, will eliminate many of the time 3,519,288 Patented July 7, 1970 consuming steps and materials required to produce the advertisement border by the commonly used cold type method. Under the common cold type method the paste-up artists construct the advertisement borders in a step-by-step operation which consists of taping a makeup sheet to a drawing board, marking the advertisement dimensions on the make-up sheet, applying inside and outside border tape to the make-up sheet, cutting the excess tape from the corners, and rubbing down all surfaces of the border tape.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. 1 is a vievrr showing one form of my border layout sheets on which a one column and a two column border box are illustrated.
FIG. 2 is a view showing a two column by two inch border box made up according to my invention.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS According to my invention I provide a supply of sheets which have border boxes of varying width and length which serve to assist advertising make-up artists. In order to more fully understand the use and function of my invention, consider the following example with reference to FIGS. 1 and 2. The forms illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2 of the drawings are merely examples illustrating one form of my invention, and while my invention is to be described in connection with such specific embodiment thereof, it is to be understood that such form may vary considerably without departing from the fundamental principle underlying my invention.
For the purpose of illustration we shall construct a border of the two column by two inch size. To construct ya border box utilizing the method of Mak-A-Box, an extra border rule 1, as shown in FIG. 1, is removed from the bottom of the pre-ruled sheet. Note that the edges 2 along the length of the pre-printed border boxes have been marked 01T or calibrated to indicate lengths from 1 inch to lO inches in 1/2 inch increments.
To finish constructing a 2 inch long border b'ox it is merly necessary to attach, as by pasting, the extra border rule to the border box at the 2 inch mark, as shown in FIG. 2.
The length or gauge marks along the border boxes can be provided with shrinkage allowances for rotary press or with no shrinkage for offset press. The border boxes shown in the figures are of the parallel rule type but it is intended that boxes will be produced with all available borders used in display advertising. It is also intended that the pads will have register marks for producing color advertisements.
While the invention has been particularly shown and described with reference to preferred embodiments thereof, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that various changes in form and details may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim is:
1. A border lay-out set comprising a plurality of sheets provided with border boxes, the border boxes of different sheets vary in size from one through eight standard advertisement columns in width and vary in length up to at least twenty-one and one-half inches; said sheet further including at least one extra border mle on said sheet, separate from said border box and of at least equal width to said border box, said extra border rule being capable of being separated from said sheet as needed wherein said borders are provided with a graduated scale such that said extra border rule may be removed from said sheet and attached across said border box relative to said graduated scale to produce a border box of a specific desired length.
2. A border lay-out set as recited in claim 1, wherein shrinkage allowances for rotary presses are included in the length of the border boxes.
