HEEL LIFT CUTTER.
No. 351,741. Patented Nov.- 2, 1886.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL A. COLLIESON, OF SOMERVILLE, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE JAMES, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
H EEL-Ll FT CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,741, dated November 2, 1886.
' Application filed May 1, 1886. Serial No. 200,783. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL A. COLLIESO'N, of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gutters for Cutting Out Heel-Pieces for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in cutting-knives used for cutting out heel-lifts, and it is an improvement on the knife described in Letters Patent of the United States numbered 219,583, and granted September 16, 1879, to George James.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 represents in plan view a strip of leather laid out in the form in which it is to be cut to form heel-lifts. Fig. 2 is aplan view showing a number of the heel-lifts cut out. Fig. 3 is a View in perspective of two cuttingknives embodying my invention in the position in which they would be placed to cutout the heel-lifts shown in Fig. 2 on the lines shown in Fig. l
My improved cutting-knives A B consist, respectively, of a blade, A, whose portion A" is bent at an obtuse angle with the main portion, and a suitable frame, A', and a blade, B, whose portion B is bent at an obtuse angle with the main portion, and a suitable frame, 13.
The operation of the knives is as follows: The leather or other material to be cut into lifts is first cut out so as to form a long-strip, a, as shown in Fig. 1, having parallel edges, a a, to serve as the breast portions of the heel-lifts to be cut therefrom. To cut the strip a into heel-lifts, I place the knife A so that' its portions A and A rest, respectively, on the lines 1 and 2 in Fig. 1. This cuts out the piece d, which is waste. Next, I place the knife B so that its portions B and B rest on the lines 4 and 3, respectively. This cuts out the lift e from the lower edge of the strip a. I next place the knife A so that its portions Aand A rest 011 the lines 5 and 6, respectively. This cuts out .the lift f, next the edge a of the strip a. Next, lplace the knife B so that its portions B and B rest on the lines 8 and 7,respectively. This cuts out the lift 9,
' ing a part of said patent, each section corresponding with and being of the shape of two lifts as out out by my methodas, for example, the lifts f and g. These sections, which, of course, must be out afterward into lifts, are produced by means of the knife, the shape of whose blade is shown inFig. 2 in said patent. Now, when thetwoknives AB, which embody my improvement, are placed relatively as shown inv Fig. 3, the portions A, B, and B thereof correspond in shape to the knife shown in said patent; but by means of the portion A of the knife A finished lifts, instead of lifts in sections, are cut from the piece a. Moreover, in
laying the knives one after the other'upon the strip to be cut, the knife B need not be placed relatively as shown in Fig. 3-that is, with the outer edge of its portion B next the bend in theknife A, but it may be placed with the outer edge of its portion B against any part knife A, according to the size and shape of the lift desired to be cut out. I
- The broken" lines in Figs. 1 and 2 indicate the shape of the rounded portions of the heellifts.
Having thus fully described my improvement, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device for cutting heel-lifts, the pair of cutting -knives A B, herein described, said knife A consisting, essentially, of a blade whose portion A is bent at an obtuse angle with the main portion A, and the frame A,
and said knife B being the reverse of said knife A, and consisting, essentially, of a blade whose portion B is bent at an obtuse angle with the main portion B, and the frame B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
SAMUEL A. GOLLIESON.
