WATER-SUPPLY APPARATUS FOR TANKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,132, dated November 2,1886.

My invention relates to watersupply apparatus for tanks, and moreparticularly to tanks for watergplcgsets, and has for its object to provide improved means whereby the water may be suddenly shut off when the tank becomes sufficiently full, and as suddenly turned on when the water is lowered in the tank.
My invention will first be described in connection with the drawings,and subsequently pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents alongit-udinal vertical section of a tank equipped with asupply apparatus embodying my invention, representing the water as turned on. Fig. 2 is a like View representingthe water as shut oft.

In thedrawings, a represents the tank, and b the supply-nozzle, secured on the upper edge of the side of the tank, and to which a ballcock, 0, of a character and construction commonly employed in contrivances of this kind, is attached.
(1 represents a rod, attached at one end to ball-cock c, and at the other end to one end of a bell-crank lever, e, as shown. Toward the free end of arm f of lever e the float g is seso that when the float is lower than the elbow of the lever the roller will carry the weight it down against the former, as represented in Fig. 1, and when the position of the parts is reversed, as shown in Fig. 2, the roller will run down upon said arm f and carry the weight to the elbow-point of the lever.
It represents a bell-crank lever pivoted at its elbow to the outer end of armf, and having its vertical arm Z extending up through a slot, m, formed in a slot or projection, n, securedto the side of or extending across the tank. Said arm Zhas a notch, 0, formed in its side near its upper end, by which means armf of lever e and its attached float may be depressed, and locked in that position by engaging the notch 0 of armZ with the edge of the slotn, as represented in'Fig. 1.
To the outer end of arm 9 of bell-crank lever upper end with a collar, 8, rigidly though adjustably secured thereto. A float, t, is ar ranged on rod 1', between the outer end of arm p of lever and collar 8, so as to slide loosely on said rod, but to be arrested in its upward movement thereon by collar 8. i
It will be seen that the levers, floats, rod,-
weight, &c., described. are all hung to the outer end of rod (1, which is secured to ballcock 0, and tend, when the water is out of the tank, to move said rod to the position represented in Fig.1, and open the cock, in a manner that will be readily understood, allowing the water to run into the tank, and when the parts are all in this position the roller j and its attached weight will be in contact with float g, and the notch 0 of arm Z will engage the slot on and lock the parts in the position described.
As the tank fills with water, float it will rise on rod r independent thereof until it comes in contact with dollar 8, when it will raise said rod with it, thus rocking elbow-lever k on its pivot, throwing back arm Z thereof and unk is rigidly secured a rod, 1', provided near its.

By my invention I secure a full and continuous flow of water until the tank is filled, thus filling the tank in less time than where the valve is gradually closed and the water in like manner shut off, and by opening and closing the valve suddenly I avoid the wear on the packing of the valve which is occasioned by the water in gradually opening and closing the same. 7
It will be'noticed that lever It and its adjuncts may be dispensed with, and the remainder of the contri vance operated with improved results, the weight under these circumstances holding the float down until the water in the tank is sufficient to lift it and float g to such a height as to incline arm fof elbow-lever e to such a degree that roller j, carrying weight 71,
will run down to the elbow-point of said lever, thus quickly depressing the outer end of rod (2, closing the cock, and stopping the flow of water into the tank.
Having thus described my invention, 1
1. A water-tank supply apparatus consisting of a nozzle, a ball compression-cock connected therewith, a rod connected at one end to said cock, an elbow-lever having one of its weight adapted to move to and fro on one of he arms of said lever as said float is raise and lowered in the tank, mechanism, substantially as described, for locking said float in its depressed position, and a supplemental float for operating upon said mechanism to automatieall y unlock or release said first-mentioned float from its depressed position as the tank fills with water, as set forth.
3. A water-tank-supply apparatus consisting of a nozzle, a ball compression-cock connected therewith, a float, a rod, and an elbowlever connecting said float with said cook, a weight adapted to move to and fro on one of the arms of said lever as said float is raised and lowered in the tank, mechanism, substantially as described, for locking said float in its depressed position, and a supplemental float operating upon said mechanism as the water falls in the tank to automatically lock said first-mentioned float in its depressed position, and as the water rises and fills the tank to unlock or release it, as set forth. f
4. The co1nbination,with the cock 0, float y, and rod and lever connecting said float with said cock, of the bell-crank lever in, connected to said first-mentioned lever and having one of its arms notched, as described, the slot a, rod 1, secured to the end of the other arm of said lever, collars, secured to said rod, and float t, as set forth.
5. The combination of the cock 0, rod (1, bell-crank lever 0, weight h, adapted to move on one arm of said lever, float g, bell-crank lever 7c, notched as described, slot a, rod 1-, provided with the collar 8, and float t, as set forth.
