SNOW AND ICE GUARD FOR HORSES HOOFS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,634, dated' October 26, 1886.
Application filed March 6, 1886. Serial No. 194,317. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL Gonna citizen of the United States, residing at Millville, in the county of Cumberland, State of New Jersey', have invented a new and useful Improvement in Snow and Ice Guards for Hoofs of Horses and other Animals, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specitication and accompanying drawings, in whichl Figure l represents a top view of a guard lembodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents alongitudinal section thereof.v Fig. 3 represents a front end View thereof.
Similar' letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists in providing alsnow and ice guard for an aninials hoof with means whereby it may be secured to a shoe at the toeand heel portions thereof. i
Referring to the drawings, A represents a plate, formed of suitable metal, adapted to be rested against the under side or tread ot' a horseshoe and close the space within the sides of the shoe, whereby ice and snow are prevented from reaching thehoof of the animal.
To the upper side of the plate, at the front end thereof, are secured lugs B B C, the lugs B B being at a right angle to the lug O. The lugs B form guides for a blocl, D, which is 3o adapted to'slide in the longitudinal direction of the plate, the said block being formed of metal, and being dovetailed to the guides or lugs B. f
E represents a screw, which is fitted to the 55 block D, and has its head F stepped in the lug G, said head being accessible through aslot, F', in the plate A. To the upper side of the plate, at the rear end thereof, are secured blocks G, which project laterally or in the 4o transverse direction of the hoof. Whenthe block Dis moved in the direction toward nthe lug C, said block and the blocks G may be inserted between the shoe of the animal. The
screw E is now rotated, whereby the block Dy is advanced and tightens against the inner wall of the toe part of the shoe This pushes theplate A rearward and forces the blocks G against the inner walls of the heel part of the shoe, and thus `the plate A is clamped to the Patent, is-
shoe, it being noticed that the outer faces of the blocks are inclined so as to overhang the inner walls of the shoe, thus causing a wedging action of the blocks and greater security in the connection of the plate with the shoe. Wvhen the screw is rotated in order to fully withdraw the block D from contact with the shoe, the plate may be readily detached from the shoe. y As the blocks and screw are on the upper side of the plate, they are prevented from coming in contact with the ground, ice, snow, 8vo. Both the inner and outer faces of the blocks G are inclined, and said-blocks are secured to the plate A Yby screws, whereby when the outer faces are worn or fractured the blocks may be rotated, and thus place the outer faces thereof' in position to engage with the shoe. 'y
Matter described in this specification or shown in the accompanying drawings and not claimed herein is reserved, another applica tion having been filed by me of even date herewith and bearing Serial No. 194,816.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters l. The plate A, having the slot F', and provided with the lugs C and B B, in combination with the threaded block D and screw E, with head F, substantially as described.
2. A plate ,with lugs B C at a right angle to eachother, a sliding block fitted to the lugs B, engaging with the toe portion of a shoe, a screw engaging with said block and stepped in the lug U, and blocks G, engaging with the heel portions of said shoe, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. rlhe plate A, with lugs C and B' B, the latter, B B, being at right angles to the lug C, the threaded block D, fitted between said lugs B B, the screw E, ,with head F, having one endjournaled in the block D, and the block G, adjustably attached to said plate A, and
having inner and outer inclined faces, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
DANIEL GOFF. Vitnesses:
JOHN A. WIEDERSEEIM, A. P. GRANT.
