Description

June 2, 1970 J. NORTON 3,515,359
' CREEL Filed Dec. 6, 1967 INVENTOR JOHN NORTON BY W Dm ATTORNEYS United States Patent 01 lice 3,515,359 Patented June 2, 1970 3,515,359 CREEL John Norton, Darwen, England, assignor to Leesona Limited, a corporation of Great Britain Filed Dec. 6, 1967, Set. N0. 688,590 Claims priority, application Great Britain, Dec. 9, 1966, 55,141/ 66 Int. Cl. B65h 49/00, 59/38 U.S. Cl. 242129.8 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention concerns creels.
Creels of many kinds are well-known and normally they consist of a framework upon which, on suitable spindles, may be mounted a number of yarn packages, the yarn from which may be drawn off tobe wound upon a weavers or warpers beami. It is necessary during the production of a weavers or warpers beam to ensure that all the yarn is wound at the same tension and that no snarling of the yarn takes place, since the clearing of snarled yarn would of necessity reduce the speed of production of the beams.
It is an object of the present invention to provide in a creel an arrangement by which yarn packages can be mounted for smooth running, thus to obviate or substantially reduce the possibility of uneven tensions or snarling According to the present invention, a creel is characterised by the provision of yarn package mounting units having rotatably mounted ona stationary member a carrier for the package, which carrier is constrained to run in a controlled manner by the provision of adjustable braking means, whereby the yarn package can be unwound to ensure uniform tension in each end of yarn.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates a portion of a creel made in accordance with the invention, with parts broken away and in section.
In the following description, one yarn package receiving mounting only will be described, since all of the mountings on a creel are identical.
The yarn package receiving mounting comprises a spindle fixed to the creel frame 11 in a nonrotatable manner. At the inner and outer ends of the spindle 10 relative to the creel frame 11 are provided sintered bronze bushes 12 upon which is rotatably mounted a wooden yarn package receiving member 13. The wooden member 13 is flanged at 14 at its end adjacent the creel frame 11, and a circumferential groove 15 is provided around the flange 14 for a purpose hereinafter referred to. Permanently mounted on the member 13 in abutment with the face of the flange 14 remote from the creel frame 11 is a first disc 16, a similar second disc 17 is provided for location on the outer end of the wooden member 13 after a yarn package 18 has been. located thereon. In order correctly to locate and retain the yarn package 18 the wooden member 13 is provided with package gripping hair springs 19 secured at spaced intervals around the periphery of the wooden member 13. A braking device consisting of a weight 20 and a carrier cord 21 is suspended around the wooden member 13 with the cord 21 located in the circumferential groove 15 of the flange 14. One end of the cord 21 is secured to a holding plate 22, itself secured. to the creel frame 11, whilst the other end of the cord 21 carries a predetermined weight 20. The weight 20 may be varied in dependence on the tension required.
In use, assuming that a weavers or warpers beam is to be prepared a plurality of packages 18 are mounted on the creel by removing the discs .17 from the outer ends of the wooden members 13 and locating the packages 18 on the members and replacing the disc 17, which latter is held in position in abutment with the package tube by means of a split ring 23. The required weight 20 is suspended from the cord 21 and beaming commences. It will be appreciated that the weight applies a restraining force to the wooden member 13 and thus the unwinding of the yarn takes place under controlled tension. The tendency of any entanglement of coils of yarn, which may slough off the package, with the spindle is prevented by virtue of the provision of the discs 16 and 1.7 at each end of the package 18 which serve to contain yarn on the rotatable wooden member 13, and thus it will unwind without becoming entangled.
While this invention has been described and illustrated with reference to a particular embodiment in a particular environment, various changes may be apparent to one skilled in the art and the invention is therefore not to be limited to such embodiment or environment other than as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A creel comprising a frame member and yarn package mounting units, each said unit having a spindle fixedly secured to said frame member, bearing means on each end of said spindle, a yarn package carrier rotatably mounted on said bearings means, a flange on said yarn package carrier at an end thereof adjacent a frame member, end discs on said yarn package carrier, a first of said discs being secured in abutment with said flange and a second of said discs being removably mounted on said yarn package carrier at its end remote from said flange, retaining means for releasably holding said second disc on said package carrier, circumferentially spaced resilient package gripping means on said yarn package carrier, and means to apply an adjustable braking force to said yarn package carrier for controlling tension in yarn being unwound therefrom and including a circumferential groove in said flange, a weight retaining cord in said groove, an adjustable weight on one end of said cord, and an anchor plate on said frame member of said creel retaining the other end of said cord.
2. A creel comprising a frame member and a yarn package mounting unit having a spindle fixedly secured to said frame member, bearing means on each end of said spindle, a yarn package carrier rotatably mounted on said bearings means, a flange on said yarn package carrier at an end thereof adjacent said frame member, end discs on said yarn package carrier, a first of said discs being in abutment with said flange and a second of said discs being removably mounted on said yarn package carrier at its end remote from said flange, retaining means for releasably holding said second disc on said package carrier, circumferentially spaced resilient package gripping means on said yarn package carrier, and means to apply an adjustable braking force to said yarn package carrier for controlling tension in yarn being unwound therefrom and including a circumferential groove in said flange, a weight retaining said cord, and an anchor plate on said frame member of said creel retaining the other end of said cord.
