SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,953, dated October 19, 1886.
Application filed February 3.0, 1386. Serial No. 192,616. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS SU'roLIFFn and J onx DIARSHALL, subjects of the Queen of England, residing at Pawtucket, inthe county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful LoomShuttle, of which the following is a specification.
Our said invention relates to an improved means for securing the spindle in the shuttleframe and yet permitting the spindle to be easily and quickly removed.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction, which will first be described with reference to the drawings and then clearly pointed out in the claim.
The accompanying drawings are hereby made part of this specification, similar letters of reference thereon indicating corresponding parts.
Figure 1 of said drawings is a longitudinal sectional elevation of ashuttle having our said improved means for holding the spindle, the spindle being shown in the center of the shuttle and carrying a filled bobbin. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, partly in elevation, of one end of a shuttle,showing the spindle raised. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the exterior side of said swinging lever, and Fig. l is an end view of the same. Fig. .3 is a detached view of the spindle, showing the grooved slots at its end.

The mutual relation and the combined use of these several parts will readily appear from the drawings. The end sought is to keep the spindle and bobbin firmly in their places, and to greatly prolong the time they may be used without changes or repairs.
The spindle is taken from the shuttle by turning the lever h up into the position shown in Fig. 2, when the spindle will easily slide out of said lever. The bobbin is placed on the spindle while the latter is so removed. To replace it the end of the spindle is inserted in the central perforation, i, of said lever, and is pushed down until the shoulder (1 reaches a similar shoulder inside the perforation, and seen at av in Fig. 1. \Vhcn the lever is swung back into place, the spindle and bobbin will lie in the center of the shuttle, as in Fig. 1, the slotted groove 0, registering with groove ein lever 71, will interlock with the pin or spindle rest a, and the slotted groove f with the rest or pin 0, the spring 1' preventing any unlocking of these parts until the lever 71 is again lifted by taking hold of the spindle or bobbin. \Vhen the parts aforesaid are interlocked, as described and shown, great firmness and steadiness of the spindle and of the bobbin thereon are secured, and the spring r and the arm in of the lever 71., lying squarely against the part y of the shuttlel'rame, contribute to prevent the wavering and wearing of the spindle heretofore incident to its use. The frame of the bobbin may or may not have the end 2, as preferred, the button-shapedend c of the spindle being sutiicient to firmly hold the bobbin in place in either ease.
Having thus described our said invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a shuttle-frame provided with spindle rests a 0, and having a receding wall, 1 of a longitudinally-perforated lever hinged in one end of said frame, and having a transverse groove, 0, in its-under side, and also having a laterally-extending arm, at, for engagement with wall y when the lever is down, a spring for holding thelever down, and a bobbin-spindle, one end of which is adapted to be passed through the lever, and in which are formed transverse grooves f 6, one of said grooves engaging with the under side of rest 0, and the other groove registering with groove 0 in the lever and engaging with the top of rest 11, substantially as described.
