Description

J'. O. TILTON. ORDNANGE FOR-USE UNDER WATER.
Patented Apr. 22, 1862.
XM'MW.
' and I do hereby declare that the following is .Thenature of my invention-consists in prothe side or end of the vessel,'the muzzle of the opening 0, to prevent the water from flowing breech pin K are put in place, as seen in the UNITE STAT PATENT- OFFICE.-
JOSEPH GHTILTON, on'ennnsno, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ORDNANCE. FOR USE UNDER WATTER.
Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No. 35,048, dated April 22,- 18(12.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J 0s. 0. TIL'roN, of Gene seo, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved mode of throwing or firing projectiles underwater;
a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
viding a long gun of equal diameter from the muzzle to the jog or shoulder T, so that the gun may be extended to any distance through gun to have a self-closing valve, 0, to keep out the water until the packing-wad M can be pushed forward and. take its place, to prevent the valve from being carried away by the projectile. The opening Ois to prevent the gun from bursting. The valve Dis for closing the into the vessel in case the valve 0 should in anyway get injured. The rarnrod N and drawing, withthe wad, when the powder and ball are put in, so as'to make tight and quick work. By means of the levers R R, the crank, and roller H, the sliding breech K is raised, so the rod NN can be removed and the charge and wad be put in. The valve D isv closed and opened by being attached to the roller H by the connecting-rod. G, so that the slide'K and rod N N cannot be. put in place and the gun discharged without the safetyvalve'D being opened, which, if closed, would cause the-gun to burst. The roller H is secured in place by means of plate I, which is screwed to the gun. The valve D swings upon the pivots S S,- which are screwed into the gunf Thevent- L must be far enough forward to leave room for the wad M, and in case-the wad-used is imperfect, and any of the gas passes back into the slot in the slide K, it would,
have a tendency to lift. it; and to prevent its 7 being lifted, thereis a small 'hole, made through the slide'at the u slot,'as seen inthe drawing.
This gun is mounted upona carriage and supported by the crank H and the screw P,
which is for elevation and depression, and the constructed and operated, substantially as described, through crank and its connections.
