UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. CALDWELL, O'F WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA.
MEANS FOR PACKING SHEET-METAL ROOFING.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,343, dated October 5, 1886.
Application filed March 16, 1886. Serial No. 195,482. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. CALDWELL, acitizen of the United States, residing at Wheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Means for Packing Sheet-Metal 'Roofing, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in means for packing sheetmetal roofing, the purpose thereof being to give full protection to the edges of the roofingsheets when the same are rolled into a cylindrical package for transportation, and at the same time to retain the shape of the package, provide a support upon which it may turn or stand, and hold the outer or lapping end of the coil tightly down.
The invention consists in the several novel features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully set forth, and definitely pointed out in the claim annexed to this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an end elevation of a roll of sheet-metal roof ing having my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the protecting and fastening strip removed. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the roll with the strip displaced.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a cylindrical roll of sheet metal roofing of the usual construction. This roll may be put up in the manner shown in my the projecting ends 4. and 5 of the wire are 1 fastened together, drawing each strip 3 closely around the end of the roll. In this position the wired edge not only affords a strong and convenient base upon which the roll may stand or be moved, but it also affords full protection to the edges of the roofing sheet or sheets, while at the same time the strips serve to retain the package in its cylindrical form. The engagement with the turned edge 2 of the sheet enables the strips to hold the corners of the same tightly and securely down.
This invention forms a simple, inexpensive, and easily-applied fastening and protection for'packages of metal roofing in transportation.
WhatI claim is- As a means for securing a cylindrical roll of sheet-metal roofing, the metallic strip 3,
having a wired edge, with the ends of the wire projecting beyond each end of the strip and adapted to be secured or tied together, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
Intestimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. BENJAMIN F. CALDWELL. Witnesses: HARDY HENRY, W. F. PETERSON.
