B05c 11/08; B05b 13/04 U.S. Cl. 118-7 11 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A glue table adapted for applying an adhesive to a header which is to be applied to the end of a Wrapped roll. The glue table includes a rotatable turntable mounted on a beam of the housing beneath an adhesive applicator and a drive system capable of selectively driving the turntable during the application of the adhesive to the header. In the preferred embodiment the glue table includes more than one turntable with each of the turntables being provided with a drive means including a clutch mechanism to selectively rotate one of the turntables which is supporting the header of the preferred or desired size. The drive means includes a latch arrangement for holding the drive means in engagement with the turntable and a protuberance on the bottom of the turntable for engaging the latch means to allow the drive means to be taken out of engagement after the turntable has moved through the desired angular displacement. The device further includes a brake for engaging the table when the drive means is disengaged for slowing and stopping the table at a predetermined angular position. The actuating means for engaging the drive means include means for activating the adhesive applicator so that the adhesive is applied only during rotation of the turntable.
This invention relates generally to improvements in apparatus for Wrapping rolls of paper or the like, and more particularly to new and improved apparatus for preparing headers which are glued to the ends of a wrapped roll of paper. Specifically, the present invention is directed to a new and improved glue table which greatly simplifies the method of preparing headers before they are glued in place on the ends of a wrapped roll.
The present invention has particular utility when used in cooperation with an automatic roll wrapping machine which prepares rolls of paper for handling and shipping. One such wrapping machine is disclosed by George J. Prager, U.S. Ser. No. 306,804, tiled Sept. 5, 1963, now U.S. Patent No. 3,290,861, which application is assigned to the same assignee. The wrapping machine includes a plurality of roll handling stations, wherein rolls of various characteristics, size and weight can be received at the head end of the wrapping machine and automatically transferred through the wrapping machine to be properly wrapped with protective wrapping of the right length, the right width, the right type and with the correct number of wrappers and with the correct size of the header secured at each end of each roll. Different diameter rolls which are wrapped require different diameter headers placed at the end thereof.
The present method used is to manually pick up a header, lay it on a turntable and adjust the glue gun to the desired position. After making the proper adjustments, the glue gun is operated to apply a ring of glue around the header near the outer periphery thereof. Upon completion of this procedure the header is then applied to one end of the roll being wrapped. Furthermore, when different size headers are used, they must be manually selected and placed on the glue table and the position of the glue gun is adjusted accordingly for the preparation of the header. Therefore, the method presently employed in preparing 'headers which are to be glued to the ends of a Wrapped roll is awkward in that it requires -continual handling by an operator of the apparatus necessary for preparing such headers.
Therefore, one of the primary objects of the present invention is to provide means for handling and preparing a number of different diameter headers which are required for the wrapping of different diameter rolls.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a glue table which will handle a multiplicity of headers of the same diameter thereby obviating the task of preparing each header individually.
A feature of the present invention is a glue table having a multiplicity of turntables each of which can be actuated independently of the other so as to prepare the desired diameter header for gluing.
Another feature of the present invention is in the design of a glue table which allows a plurality of turntable assemblies to be constructed substantially the same, thereby reducing a manufacturing cost of such glue tables and providing interchangeability of components.
Briefly, the glue table of the present invention includes a housing which supports a number of turntables to sufficiently handle stacks of the different diameter headers required for the wrapping of different diameter rolls. Each turntable is substantially the same in construction, being different only in their overall diameters. This feature permits various diameter headers to be utilized by merely placing the desired diameter turntables into one of a plurality of pre-machined locations which are associated with the housing.
The glue table of the present invention further includes a single drive motor to accommodate the required number of turntables. A control lever is provided to simultaneously engage the desired turntable with the drive means and to actuate the gluing gun which applied a bead of glue near the outer periphery of the selected header. Additionally, a brake mechanism is associated with each turntable to stop rotation thereof and to stop the flow of glue being applied to the header.
One advantage of the glue table of the present invention is that the entire unit, including the control panel and drive means can be self-contained in a main frame or housing.
The glue which is utilized with the glue table of the present invention can be of the hot melt or of the type which is used with a pressure tank for containing liquefied glue. Therefore, the glue container can also be mounted on the main frame.
Another advantage is that a number of headers can be stacked on each turntable, thus eliminating the necessity of repetitiously placing single headers on the turntable to be glued. Although the glue table of the present invention is herein described as being a stationary unit which forms a part of a wrapping machine, it will be understood that the novel construction of the glue table of the present invention allows suitable portability if desired. The housing of the glue table may be placed on suitable rollers if such portability is necessary.
Other objects, features and advantages will be more fully realized and understood from the following detailed description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which like reference numerals throughout the various views of the drawings are intended to designate simple elements or components and wherein;
FIGURE l is an elevational plan view of a glue table which is constructed in accordance with the principlesl of this invention, and which shows a plurality of different diameter turntables for receiving stacks of different diameter headers;
FIGURE 2 is an elevational somewhat diagrammati view showing one of the turntables of FIGURE 1 and an associated platen for receiving prepared headers to be applied to the end of a Wrapped roll;
FIGURE 3 illustratesl diagrammatically the drive mechanism which is mounted within the housing of the glue table of FIGURE l for transmitting power to each of the turntables thereof;
FIGURE 4 is an elevational view of one of the turntables of FIGURE l with parts broken away to more clearly show the drive means which is engageable with the associated turntable for rotation thereof;
FIGURE 5 is a partial sectional view taken along the lines VwV of FIGURE 4;
FIGURE 6 is an elevational sectional view taken along the lines VI--VI of FIGURE 5; and
FIGURE 7 is an elevational sectional view of a typical drive means used to transmit power to the turntables of FIGURE 1.
Seen in FIGURE l is a glue table 10 which includes a housing 11 for receiving and holding a plurality of extended beams of different length. By way of example, a beam 12 is secured to the housing 11 and includes means for journalling a turntable 13 which is provided for receiving stacked headers 14. A beam 16 is secured to the housing 11 for journalling a turntable 17 which is of greater diameter than the turntable 13. Stacked headers 18 of a given diameter are placed on the turntable 17 where they are prepared for gluing to the end of a wrapped roll. Similarly, a beam 19 isv secured to the housing 11 for journalling a turntable 20, which turntable is of greater diameter than the turntable 17. Stacked headers 21 are placed on the turntable 20` where they are prepared for gluing. Additionally, a beam 22 is secured to the housing 11 for journalling a turntable 23. Stacked headers 24 are positioned on the turntable 23.
Each of the beams 12, 16, 19 and 22 are provided with an open area between two side Walls which receives a drive wheel 26 which is selectively engageable with the bottom surface of a corresponding turntable. In the deactuated condition, each of the drive wheels 26 is spaced from the bottom surface of its corresponding turntable. However, upon selecting the desired header to be prepared, one of the turntables 13, 17, 20 or 23 is rotated by actuation of the drive wheel 26 thereby placing the drive wheel in frictional engagement with the desired turntable. Also secured to the housing 11 is a plurality of glue guns 27 each of which are positioned so as to dispense the desired quantity of glue near the outer periphery of the desired diameter header.
-For example, should it be desirous to prepare the smallest diameter header from the stack 14, the drive wheel 26, which is continuously rotating, is placed in frictional engagement with the bottom surface of the turntable 13. Also, the glue gun 27 is actuated to dispense the desired quantity of glue on the top header of the stack 14.
As seen in FIGURE 2, a platen 28 is pivotally connected to an extendible piston rod 29 of an actuator 30. The surface 28a of the platen 28 may be provided with a plurality of apertures which are in uid communication with a vacuum line 31 secured to the opposite side thereof. Therefore, when the prepared header from the top of the top of the stack 14 is placed on the surface 28a of the platen 28 it will be held in place by vacuum which is supplied to the platen through the line 31. Furthermore, transfer means 32, which is indicated diagrammatically, may be operated from a suitable vacuum source. Therefore, the top header from the stack 14 may be lifted therefrom and placed on the platen when the platen is in the position indicated by the broken line. After the header has been placed on the platen, the platen is rotated as 4 indicated by the solid line, and the piston rod 29 extend so as to place the prepared header at the end of a roll 33.
Seen in FIGURES 4 and 5 is the detailed construction of one of the turntables of FIGURE l. The turntable 13 is provided with a stub shaft 36 which is journalled by a bearing 37 mounted at the free end of the beam 12. As seen in FIGURE 5, the beam 12 is preferably a casting which has an opening 38 formed therein.
Drive means 39 is pivotally connected to the housing 11. The drive means 39 includes a housing 40 which has a boss 41 formed thereon. A pin 42 is provided to pivotally connect the drive means 39 to the housing 11. Therefore, when the drive means 39 is raised, as seen in FIGURE 4, the drive wheel 26 is placed in frictional driving engagement with the bottom surface of the turntable 13.
As seen in FIGURE 6, the housing 40, of the drive means 39, is provided with a hook 43 which engages a notch 44 formed in a latch 45. An actuating lever 46 is journalled by a bushing 47 which 'bushing is secured in a mounting block 48. A portion of the actuating lever 46 engages an actuating button 55a of an air valve 55. Therefore, when the actuating lever 46 is pivoted about the bushing 47 to raise the drive means 39 by engagement of an end or finger of the actuating lever 46, the air valve 55 is also actuated to provide simultaneous actuation of the particular glue gun 27 which is connected thereto.
The bottom surface of the turntable 13 is provided with a protuberance 49 which is positioned on the glue table radially outwardly so as to be engagea'ble with the top portion of the latch 45. Therefore7 when the turntable 13 has completed one revolution the protuberance 49 will engage the top portion of the latch 45 and disengage the hook 43 from the notch 44 thereby causing the drive wheel 26 to be lowered. A second protuberance 50 is formed on the bottom surface of the turntable 13. For example, when the turntable 13 is rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow 51, the protuberance 49 will engage the top portion of the latch 45 after one complete revolution of the turntable. This action will cause the drive means 39 to be lowered and rotate the actuating lever 46 about the bushing 47 in a counterclockwise direction, as seen in FIGURE 6. Therefore, the air valve 55 will be deactuated to stop the flow of glue from the glue gun 27. Furthermore, this action will cause a brake means or mechanism which includes a stop 52 which is secured to the actuating lever 46 to lbe raised in close proximity with the bottom surface of the turntable 13. The protuberance 50 is positioned radially outwardly to engage the stop 52 thereby stopping further rotation of the turntable 13. The stop 52, as illustrated in FIGURE 6, is provided with a brake shoe 61 for engaging the undersurface of the turntable 13 as the actuating lever 46 moves in the counterclockwise direction to slow the rotation of the turntable prior to engagement of the stop 52 with the protuberance 50.
The actuating lever 46 may be actuated by hand or by automatic means as desired. For example, suitable sensing means may be positioned on the wraping machine at the station where the headers are to be applied. The sensing means may determine the diameter of the roll being wrapped to provide an actuating signal which will activate the desired turntable.
As seen in .FIGURE 7, a shaft 53 is journalled by a pair of bearings 54 and 56 which are carried by the housing 40 of the drive means 39. A pulley 57 is fastened to one end of the shaft 53 and is wrapped by a belt 58, as seen in4 FIGURE 4.
As best seen in FIGURE 3, each of the pulleys 57, which are drivingly connected to corresponding, ones of the drive wheels 26, are wrapped by the continuous belt l58. Although only three pulleys are shown, it will be understood that four or more pulleys may be utilized as required. Between each adjacent pulley 57 is an idler pulley 59. Furthermore, an idler pulley 59a may be provided to direct the belt 58 in the desired direction s0 as to properly wrap the drive pulleys 57. Also wrapped by the belt 58 is a main drive pulley `60 which is connected to a drive source or motor 61. Therefore, for purposes of compactness as well as economy, all of the turntables 13, 17, and 23 are driven by a single drive motor.
Referring to FIGURE 4, the glue gun 27 is mounted on a hollow rod 66 which is adjustably secured to the housing 11 by a hand screw 67. A hose 68 is connected to one end of the hollow rod 66 for delivering glue to the glue gun 27. Also connected to the glue gun 27 is an air line 69 which is in fluid communication with the air valve 45, of FIGURE 6.
IN OPERATION To prepare a header for gluing, from the stack 14 for example, the lever 46 is actuated so as to raise the drive means 39 upwardly, as seen in FIGURE 4. This action will place the drive wheel 26 in frictional driving engagement with the lower surface of the turntable 13. The hook 43 will engage the notch 44 of the latch 45 thereby maintaining the drive means 39 in the actuated position during the preparation of a header. Furthermore, actuation of the lever 46 will cause the air valve 55 to be actuated thereby supplying air to the glue gun 27 via line 69 to dispense glue onto the topmost header of the stack 14 near the outer periphery thereof. After one revolution of the turntable 13, the-protuberance 49 will engage the upper portion of the latch 45 thereby releasing the drive means 39 from its actuated position. As the drive means 39 pivots about the pin 42, so as to lower the drive wheel 26 from engagement with the bottom surface of the turntable 13, the actuating lever 46 will rotate through the axes of the bushing 47 so as to raise the stop 52 in close proximity with the lower surface of the turntable 13. Shortly thereafter, the protuberance 50 will strike the stop 52 thereby stopping further rotation of the turntable 13. Also, the air valve 55 is de-actuated to stop further operation of the glue gun 27. This action insures that a complete ring of glue is applied to the header so that the header will adhere properly to the end of a wrapped roll.
The present invention has set forth a new and novel glue table structure which incorporates a minimum num ber of dii-ferent kinds of components and which has particular utility when used in cooperation with automatic wrapping apparatus such as that disclosed by George I. Prager, Ser. No. 306,804, filed Sept. 5, l963. It will be understood that variations and modifications may be effected without departing from the spirit and scope of the novel concept of this invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A glue table for preparing headers which are to glued to the end of a wrapped roll comprising:
a housing;
a turntable rotably supported by said housing for re ceiving a header to be prepared for gluing;
drive means selectively engageable with said turntable for driving same, said drive means having a drive wheel for engagement with said turntable;
means for moving said drive wheel laterally into driving engagement with said turntable to rotate the same; and
means applying glue mounted on said housing in a position to apply glue on a header disposed on said table, said means for applying being controlled by said moving means so that said glue is applied to the header as said turntable is rotated.
2. A glue table according to claim 1 which further includes brake means engageable with said turntable for stopping the rotation thereof after glue has been applied to the header.
3. A glue table according to claim 1, wherein said drive means includes latch means for holding said drive means in engagement with said turntable, and wherein said turntable includes a projection engageable with Said latch means so that the drive means is disengaged after a predetermined amount of rotation of said turntable.
4. A glue table according to claim 1, wherein said means for moving includes a lever having a pivot and being pivotally mounted adjacent a bottom surface of the turntable at its pivot;
a brake shoe mounted on said lever and spaced from said pivot to engage the underside of said turntable when said lever is in one position; and
a linger mounted on said lever spaced from said pivot in a direction opposite of said brake shoe and engageable with said drive means to urge said drive means into engagement with the turntable when said lever is in a second position.
5. A turntable according to claim 4 wherein said lever engages a control means for starting the means applying glue as said lever assumes the second position.
6. A turntable according to claim 4 wherein said drive means for said turntable includes latch means for holding said drive means in engagement with said turntable, and wherein said turntable includes a 4projection engageable with said latch means so that the drive means is disengaged at a predetermined degree of rotation of said table.
7. A glue table for preparing headers which are to be glued to the end of a wrapped roll comprising:
a housing;
a plurality of supports each one carried on said housing;
a turntable rotatably mounted on each of said supports, each of said turntables being adapted for receiving stacked headers which are to be prepared for gluing;
a drive motor;
a plurality of drive means operatively connected to said drive motor, each drive means being associated with a single turntable and being selectively engageable therewith for rotating said turntable;
a glue applying means associated with each of said turntables and disposed for applying glue on a header placed thereon; and
actuating means associated with each of said drive means for engaging the respective drive means with its turntable and for controlling the glue applying means associated therewith to enable the rotation of a selected turntable and the application of glue to a header disposed thereon.
8. A glue table according to claim 7, which further includes a brake means associated with each of the turntables and engagea-ble therewith for stopping rotation thereof after the glue has been applied to the header disposed thereon.
9. A glue table according to claim 8, wherein said turntable includes a projection engageable by said brake means and coactable therewith to provide positive stopping of rotation of the respective turntable.
10. A glue table according to claim 7, wherein said actuating means includes a lever having a pivot and being pivotally mounted adjacent the bottom surface of the respective turntable at its point of pivot;
a brake shoe mounted on said lever and spaced from said pivot to engage the bottom surface of said turntable when said lever is in one position; and
a finger mounted on said lever spaced from said pivot in each direction opposite to said brake shoe and engageable with the respective drive means to urge said drive means into engagement with its respective turntable when said lever is in a second position.
11. A glue table according to claim 7, wherein said drive means for each turntable includes latch means for holding said drive means in engagement with said turntable and wherein said turntable includes a projection engageable with said latch means so the drive means is disengaged after a predetermined amount 0f angular displacement of said turntable.
