R. JONES.
GAR COUPLING. No. 350,062. Patented Sept. 28, 1886.
lllllllllW I Win55 E5 Jmr in? 4% @LM is WW L UNITED STATES REUBEN JONES, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR OF THREE-FOURTHS TO CHARLES A. SINDALL, OF SAME PLACE.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,062, dated September 28, 1886.
Application filed August 23, 1886. Serial No. 211,684. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REUBEN JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia,
haveinvented a new and useful Gar-Coupling and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the IO same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and toletters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to the class of carcouplings thathave a link and a pin lifter, and has especial reference to the improvement in car-couplings for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted me on the th day of May, 1886, hearing No. 34:2,517, and also to 20 an invention contained in an application filed by me on the 2d day of July, 1886, N0. 206,992,
series of 1880; and it principally consists in mechanism for operating the link and pin lifter therein described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a perspective of a draw-head. Fig. II is a vertical longitudinal section through the d rawhead with the pin raised. Fig. III is a detail showing the shaft which pivots the link lifter.
Fig. IV is a detail showing the shaft of the pin-lifter. Fig. V is a section of a portion of thedraw-head,showing the inside of thelug 17.
In the figures, I is a draw-head.
2 is a link-lifter pivoted in the neck of the draw-head by the shaft 3, which has an upwardly-projecting crank, 4.
5 is the pin, and 6 the pin lifter, connected thereto by a link. The pin-lifter is pivoted on the shaft 7, and has a slot, 8, through which passes the pin 9. The rear end of the pinlifter 6 has a rearward projection, 10, forming a stop against the flange 11 on the draw-head. The shaft of the pin-lifter has a downwardlyprojecting crank, 21.
5 12 are rock-shafts provided with handles 13,
and attached to the shaft of the pin-lifter by the couplings 14.
15 is a ball to support the pin when withdrawn.
16 is a shoulder on the lug 17 to support the arm 6.
Theoperation of this device is as follows:
To uncouple two cars, it being necessary to raise the pin in the draw-head of one, it is accomplished by turning the shaft 12 of the pinlifter toward the car to which it belongs, and the pin 9 will engage with the rear end of the slot 8, and carry with it the pin-lifting arm 6 and lift the pin, which will allow the link to be withdrawn from that drawhead, when the ball 15 will roll under the pin and support it; or, if desired, the pin may be raised slightly higher until the rcarwardly-projecting end 10 will stop it. when it may be pushed onto the shoulder 16, which will support the pin when it is desired to push cars and not to couple them. At all other times the pin should be supported by the ball,in order that it will drop on the ball being pushed out of the way by the incoming link. To couple two cars, the pin being supported by the ball in one, the link in the other is raised by turning the rockshaft 12 away from the car to which it is at tached, the slots in the linklifting arm allowing it to be so turned, which will cause the 5 downwardly-projecting crank 21 to engage with the upwardly-projecting crank 4 and carry it toward the car, which operation will raise the link to any desired height. As it is never necessary to raise the pin and link in 8c the same draw head at the same time, this plan of operating the link and pin lifter is less complicated, more easily attached to cars of any construction, and more convenient of operation than those heretofore used. 8 5
It is not my intention in this application to claim anything shown in my previous Letters Patent and application hereinbefore referred to; but
\Vhat I do claim as new, and desire to secure 0 by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a car-coupling, the combination of the draw-head 1, the link-lifter 2, pivoted by a shaft having a crank, 4, a pin-lifting arm, 6, pivoted on a shaft having a crank, 21, andthe rock-shaft 12, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
REUBEN JONES.
