Pamoxsm United States Patent U.S. CL 114-183 3 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed herein is a pump which removes water that may accumulate in the :bilge of a boat. The pump has a hollow body divided into a first compartment and a second compartment by a hollow diaphragm. The first compartment has an inlet connected to the bilge of the boat with a check valve in the inlet and an outlet connected to the first compartment with a check valve in the outlet and a spring urging the diaphragm toward the second compartment. The outlet of the pump is connected to an opening in the side of a boat which must be above the normal waterline of the boat. The second compartment is connected to an opening in the bottom of the boat. Thus, when the boat pitches forward and aft, the differential pressures on the two sides of the diaphragm are changed and a pumping action results which will remove the water from the bilge of the boat.
The purpose of the invention is to pump water that accumulates in the boat bilge without any electrical or mechanical means specifically during rough weather. As the boat pitches forward and aft, as the case may be, the pressure of the sea water forced through the opening in the bottom of the boat and the sea water entry line forces the diaphragm upward closing the ball check valve and forcing the bilge water accumulated in the bilge Water accumulating chamber out through the swinging check valve to overboard discharge. Then, as the boat returns to even keel, the spring pushes the diaphragm towards its normal position at the same time forming a vacuum in the bilge Water accumulating chamber which in turn closes the swinging check valve to the discharge line and opening the ball check valve in the bilge suction line.
It is, accordingly, an object of the invention to provide an improved combination pump and boat.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved means for removing the water from the bilge of a pump.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combination pump for use in a boat which is simple in construction, economical to manufacture, and simple and efiicient to use.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, size, proportions, and minor details of construction without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a longitudinal cross sectional view of the pump according to the invention; and
FIG. 2 is a schematic side view of a boat having a pump installed therein; and
FIG. 3 is an enlarged partial view of the inlet end of the invention.
Now with more particular reference to the drawings, the boat is indicated generally at 10. It has a bottom 21 and sides 23. The normal waterline of the boat is indicated at 22. The pump has a body 11 which is hollow and divided into a sea water accumulation chamber 13 and a bilge Water chamber 12 by diaphragm 14. The pump body may be made of two separate parts 25 and 26 which sandwich the outer peripheral edges of the diaphragm 14 between flanges as shown and it may be clamped together in a manner familiar to those skilled in the art.
The diaphragm 14 will normally be a flexible thin sheet of material, such as rubber, and of the type normally used in valves of this type familiar to those skilled in the art. It will have the spring 19 supported in the bilge water chamber 12 and the spring 19 will be supported on the diaphragm by the keeper 27 which will be clamped to the center of the diaphragm in a suitable manner and a boss 28 is fixed to the upper part of the valve body.
The inlet to the body has a check valve 18 in the form of a ball which will prevent the water from the bilge water chamber 12 from flowing from this chamber to the bilge of the boat. The line 17 will be connected to the bilge and water from the bilge must flow through a screen arrangement 17' to prevent foreign objects from being drawn upinto the pump and interfering with the operation of its valves 18 and 20. Valve 18 is held in place by wire cage 35 or any other suitable method. The outlet of the bilge chamber will be connected by line 15 to an opening 15' in the side of the boat which will be above the waterline of the boat. The sea water entrance line 30 will be connected to the opening 31 in the bottom of the boat and may be secured to the bottom of the boat by a suitable grommet 32 so that sea water may enter the sea water entry 16.
A swinging check valve 20 is connected in the outlet from the pump body and to the discharge line 15.
In operation, the pump will be connected as shown in FIG. 2 and when the boat pitches forward and aft, the pressure of the sea water as it is forced from entrance 16 into the sea water entry line 30 will cause a diiferential pressure on the bottom of diaphragm 14. When this pressure is relieved, this will cause valve 18 to seat and water will be forced out past valve 20 and line 15. It will cause spring 19 to force the diaphragm 14 down. This will cause valve 20 to seat and water will be drawn in from line 17 past valve 18 into chamber 12. Thus, a pumping action will draw water through the line 17 and discharge it overboard through the line 15.
The line 17 is held to the body 11 by means of a clamp 36 which is locked in position by means of set screw 37.
The foregoing specification sets forth the invention in its preferred practical forms but the structure shown is capable of modification within a range of equivalents without departing from the invention which is to be understood is broadly novel as is commensurate with the appended claims.
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
1. In combination a boat and a bilge pump,
said boat having sides, a bottom and a transom,
said bottom defining a bilge,
a first opening in the bottom of said boat,
a second opening in a side of said boat above the normal water line,
saidpump comprising a hollow pump body,
a diaphragm connected across the inside of said hollow body dividing said body into a first compartment and a second compartment,
an inlet at one end of said body connected to said first compartment and means connecting said inlet to said bilge,
an outlet at the other end of said body connected to said second opening,
a first check valve for allowing water to enter said first compartment from said inlet and preventing water to flow from said body to said inlet, a second check valve for allowing water to flow from said first compartment to said second opening but first check valve is a ball check valve and said second 10 check valve is a flap type check valve.
3. The combination recited in claim 1 wherein said means for connecting said inlet to said bilge comprises a tube extending to the bottom of said boat and a strainer over the lower end of said tube.
