SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,792, dated September 28, 1886.

To all whom it may concern..-

Be it known that I, J osnrn GOTTSOHALK, of Baltimore city, State of Maryland, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Bill- Files, of which the following is a specification.

Myinvention relates, generally, to that class of paper-files in which are employed puncturing and transfer wires movable apart; and

' it consists in the novel devices by which the wires may be held apart when so adjusted, and in certain other features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be described.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a detail view of thehinged plate. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the base and hinged plates A D.

In use a plate, A, is secured on a suitable board or base, B. On this plate are mounted the puncturing-wires C C, which are preferably hollow, forming tubes.

To the plateA is hinged the plate D, which is provided with the transfer wires or hooks E, the points of which are movable into and out of contact with the points of the puncturing-wires. A spring, F, is arranged to bear under the plate D, and serves to keep the wires C and E normally in contact, as shown. An arm, G, is connected with the plate D at or near its movable edge, and extendslaterally from such plate to a point about in line with the side of the board B. It is preferred to form this arm integrally with the plate D, and also to depress slightly its outer portion, 9, so the same may move into a groove or slot, b, in the base-board when moved to adjust the wires 0 E apart. A latch, H, is preferably used to secure the arm G when depressed. To this end it is also preferred to form the base with a groove, 1), to receive the dropped portion 9 it and gives it a constant forward tension. bar, J, is connected with and extended laterally outward from the latch-bar. h, and to obviate any projection beyond the side of baseboard B it is usual to form a mortise, 3, in the side of the board and arrange the handle of the latch therein. It will. be noticed that arm G furnishes a simple handle by which the plate B may be adjusted as desired from the side of the board B and out of the way of the pagers held on the wires. By the arrangement of the latch devices the plate D, when held down to adjust the wires apart, may be released from the side of the board, as will be seen.

While it is preferred to provide the plate A wit-h a section of the hinge and to pivot the plate D thereto, it will be understood that the plate D might be hinged directly to the board. The construction as shown, however, is simple, and enables the proper connection of the improvement with .a base or board to be easily effected.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim-as new is 1. In a bill-file, a plate or carrier having transfer-wires and provided with a lateral handle-arm, substantially as set forth.

2. A bill-file comprising the'plate having the transfer-wires and hinged at one edge, an arm extended laterally from themovable edge of such plate, and a latch arranged to engage such arm, substantially as set forth.

3. In a bill-file, the combination, with the base having a groove, 1), and the hinged plate having the transfer-wires,of the arm extended from said plate and having its outer endmovable into and out of groove 1), and a latch movable over groove 1), substantially as set forth.

4. In a bill-file, the combination of the support or base having a side 1nortise, 3, the plate having a lateral arm, and a latch arranged to engage said arm, and having a lateral handle projected into and movable within the mortise 3, substantially as set forth.
