LE GRAND SKINNER..
ENGINE FRAME JIG. PTO-649,751 Patented Sept. 28,1886.
N. PETERS Pmwumc n m. vmm' n nnnnnn c,
A UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
LE GRAND SKINNER, OEERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE SIGNMENTS, TO THE SKINNER ENGINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ENGINE-FRAME JIG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,757. dated September 28, 1886.
I Application filed .Tune 4, 1885. Serial No. 167,662. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LE GRAND SKINNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county-of Erie and State of Pennsyl Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Engine-Frame.Templets or Jigs; andI do hereby declare thefollowing to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in engine-frame templets; and it consists in the mechanism hereinafter set forth and explained in. the specification and claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved engine-frame templet or jig with parts thereof detached. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the cylinder-head face-plate thereof. Fig. 3 is 'a perspective view of the detachable rocker-shaft templet mechanism thereof. Fig. ivshows a collar to be placed in front of cylinder-plate. and 6 show details.
Similar letters refer to like parts in all the figures.
Figs. 5
In the construction of my improved tem-.
plet or jig, B is the main supporting rod or frame thereof. Firmly seemed to one end of the rod 13 is a cross-piece, A A, adapted to be placed in the pillow-block boxes of an engine. This cross-piece A A is provided with fixed collars a a, and also with loose collars a a, adapted to fit against the inner and outer ends of thepillow-block boxes, so that molten babbitt may be poured into the boxes over the crosspieces A A for fitting the same for the shaft. Securely attached to the central part of the rod B are also blocks or bearings G G,'provided with holes g 9, adapted to receive, line up, and sustain the guide-bolts while the same are being babbitted into place in an. engine-frame. Glamped to the rod B between the blocks G G is also an arm, H, which is kept from turning on the rod B by the fin h. The lower end of the arm H is provided with a cross-sleeve, H, and set-screw 71, this sleeve H being adapted to receive and support the rocker-shaft telnplet-rod H", for lining up and babbitting the rocker-shaft boxes on an engine-frame.
On the end of the rod .13, opposite the pillow-block cross-piece A A, I place a recessed with a set-screw, e, and is adapted to slip on theend of the collar D and leave some space between a portion of saidsleeve D and the outer end of the collar E, so that the collar E is adapted to fit over the end of the sleeve 1) and against the end of the cylinder-head, where it is secured in place by the set-screw e operating against the supporting-rod B.
On the outer end of the supporting-rod B, I place a face-plate, O, which is provided with a long sleeve, O, adapted to fit the rod B closely and slide thereon. The face of the plate 0 is adapted to be shoved up adjacentto the face of the cylinder-head" and against the end of the sleeve D, substantially as shown in Fig. 1, when it may be secured by a set-screw (not shown) upon the supporting-rod 13. Holes 0 are also provided in the face-plate O,
into which templet-pinsc may be placed,
which will pass through openings for the boltholes in the cylinder-head;lthese templetpins 0 being provided withsliding collars 0', adapted to fit against the outer end of the cylinder-head, and'having set-screws therein for securing themin placeythisface-plate mechanism being .so arranged that when in place on an engine-frame moltenbabbitt or other metal maybepoured between the same and said cylinder-head,'and the same thereby turned up in line with otherbearings on the engine-frame, and thereby finished ready for the reception of a cylinder and stuffing-box.
In the drawings I have shown a simple and convenient form of templet or jig for the purpose specified. However,-I donot desire to limit myself to the peculiar form of construction shown, as it is obvious to those skilled in the art to which it appertains that it can readily be constructed in many different shapes and good results obtained therewith without in any wise departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my improvement and the adaptation of its several parts, its operation will be obvious to those conversant with the art to which it appertains without further description thereof; therefore,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a templet or jig, a cross-bar adapted to rest in the pillow-block boxes of an engineframe, provided with and having attached thereto a rigid rod or frame extending to or beyond the cylinder-head on such engineframe, in combination with a movable faceplate adapted to cover the face of such cylinder-head, and'to be adjusted thereto on said rod or frame so as to line up with the pillowblock boxes, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a templet or jig, of a crossbar adapted to restin the pillow-block boxes of an engineframe, and a rigid rod or frame attached thereto and extending to the cy1inder-head on such engine-frame, wit-h bearings or supports on said rod or' frame, to which the guide-bolts may be adjusted and lined up with the pillow-blockboxes and the cylinder-head on an engine-frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, in a templet or jig, of
a supporting-rodprovided with a cross-piece adapted to fit the pillow-block boxes of an engine-frame, with a face-plate adapted to cover the face of a cylinder-head on said frame, templet-pins adapted to pass through cylin der bolt-hole openings,'and a collar and sleeve adapted to pass through the stuffingbox in such cylinder-head, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, in a templet or jig, of a supporting-rod provided with a crosspiece adapted to be placed in the pillow-block boxes of an engine-frame, and with an adjustable cylinder-head face-plate adapted to cover the face of the cylinder-head on such engine-frame, with bearings or supports attached to said rod for adjusting and sustaining guide-bolts, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination, in a templet or jig, of a supporting-rod provided with a pillow-block templet-rod, an adjustable cylinder-head face-plate, and guide-bolt supports, with an arm on said rod supporting a rocker-shaft templet-rod, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
LE GRAND SKINNER.
