GUPBOARD CATCH.
N0. 349,671. Patented Sept. 21, 1886.
, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE B. SVARTZVELDER, OE LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
cupoARD-CATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentANo. 349,671, dated September 21, 1886,
Application filed April 17, 1886. Serial No. 199,174.
To aLZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HORACE B. SWARTZ- WELDER, a citizen of the United States, .residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cupboard-Catches, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
-My improvements pertain to what is known to the trade as spring cupboardcatches, and can be used under all circumstances where catches of this class are at present in service; and the object of my improvement is to furnish an automatic catch which shall be compact and simple, with a knob which shall serve the double purpose of a handle with which to open the door, and at ythe same time a suitable case or covering for the working parts of this device to protect the same from accident, and as it is necessary to know the arrangement of this device in order to open the door, it will thereby avoid the annoyance of young children and others who do not know it from Working the same-a convenience which will be appreciated by all housewives.
The nature and operation of this device will be readily seen by all conversant with such matters from the following explanations and the accompanying drawings.
Figure l represents a full side sectional elevation showing all the working parts of this device; Fig. 2, a full side perspective view of the body of this arrangement; Fig. 3, a pernaled in the recess 0f the knob at C, projects through the door, so that the offset e on its end will clutch fast withthe shelf-catch f,which is made fast to the bottom ofthe shelf with screws,
(No model.)
as shown.. The piston or push-button ,working the recess h of the knob,is journaled fast to the lever d at b, and the end of the lever d i's kept in contact with the shelf-catch f by means L of the spiral spring m, which also keeps'the other end in contact with a project-ion in the recess of the knob at g.
- Having thus described this device,the1nan Fig. 1, as the journal b is eccentrically out of line with thejournal C, the action of forcing in the button c will drive the jaw e on the end of the lever d down and out of clutch with the shelf-catch f, thereby allowing the door to swing open. When the thumb is removed from the button the spring m will force the lever back and the button out until the upper end of the lever d comes in contact with the projection g in the recess of the knob, which always keeps the lever in proper position.
To close the door it is only necessary to push it shut, for, as the device is automatic,it locks itself.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The recessed knob A, in combination with lever d, which is provided with offset e, and pivoted within said knob at c, the catch f, which engages said offset, the spring m,which maintains said lever in such engagement, and the push-button a,wliich is pivoted to the inner end of said lever at a point out of line with said lpivot c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
HORACE B. SWARTZWELDER. Vitnesses:
A. F. SHENCK, WM. J. MINGLE.
