RIVBTING TO0L.-

RALPH A. WOODING, OF KENSINGTON, CONNECTICUT.
RlVETlNG-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,622, dated September 21, 1886.
Application filed April 21, 1886. Serial No. 199,605. (No model.)'
I To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RALPH A. WooDING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kensington, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Riveting-and Heading Tools; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, andin wh ich-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tool for riveting sleigh-bells to straps. Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views. showing the tool in operation inserted through a bell made with an aperture in the center of its top. Figs. 4 and 5 are similar views showing the tool inserted into a bell having perforations at the sides; and Figs. 6 and 7 are respectively perspective views of a bell with an aper ture in the center of its top, and with apertures in the sides.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
llIy invention has relation to tools for rivet ing sleigh-bells to straps; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of and formed with a straight end, C.
parts of such a tool, which may be inserted into a bell andhead a rivet perfectly and without moving it from the end of the rivet, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates'the tool, one end, B, of which is flat This straight end, which is sufficiently thin to pass through the slit in the top of a sleigh-bell, is formed with bulges D D at the centers of its sides, the said bulges forming anenlargernent at the center of the edge, which is preferably formed with a concave face, E, although the face mayeither be flat, or it may be formed with grooves or ridges.
The bells, which in the drawings are lettered F, may be either formed with an aperture, G, in the center of the top and of the slit H, or they may be formed with two apertures, I I, at the ends of the slit in the sides of the bell, as shown, respectively, in Figs. 6 and 7, and the bells are secured upon the strap J by placing the perforation K in the base of the bell upon the rivet L, which projects up through the strap, and thereupon inserting the tool into the bell, and by placing the same upon the end of the rivet and striking it the rivet may be headed.
When the bells are formed with central apertures, the bulged part will pass through this aperture, and the narrower portions of the tool will slip through the slit, while when the bell is provided with two side apertures the bulge may be slid from the side through one of the apertures, the tool sliding edgewise through the slit; but in this manner the tool will not be so easily inserted, or may not be so conveniently centered upon the rivet, for which reason I prefer the bells having the apertures in the center of their tops.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. A tool for riveting sleigh-bells 'to straps, consisting of a handle having a flat lower portion provided with a straight fiat lower end, and formed with two laterally projecting bulges, making an enlargement upon the face at the lower end of the tool at the center of the said face, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. A tool for riveting sleigh-bells to straps, consisting of a handle having aflat lower portion formed with a straight fiat lower end providedwith two laterally-projecting bulges, forming a central enlargement upon the face of the lower end of the tool having a concave face, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as RALPH A. woonrne.
