JAMES SAMUEL JONES, OF CRUTOHFIELD, KENTUCKY.
WAGON-BED HOIST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,502, dated September 21, 1886.
7 Application filed April 29, 1886. Serial No. 100,571. (No model.)
To all whom it may aonlcern:
Be it known that I, JAMES SAMUEL J ONES, of Crutchfield, in' the county of Fulton and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in XVagon-Bed Hoists, of which the following is a specification, reference being had tothe annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, partly insection, showing the application of my improved wagon-bed hoist. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the windlass employed in raising the wagonbed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the clampingarm of the windlass.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the diflerent figures of the drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide simple and 'efficient mechanism for hoisting wagon-beds from wagons.
My invention consists in a windlass provided with a clamp, by which it may be temporarily secured to the wagon-bed or bottom of the wagon-box, and in sheaves secured to the ceiling or upperfloor-joists of the carriagehouse, forreceiving the rope employed in hoisting the wagon-bed.
The Windlass A consists of a winding'druni, B, mounted on a shaft, 0, journaled in a frame, D, which is provided with a shank, E. The drum B has flanges a on opposite ends, and a pin or eye, I), projecting from its periphery for receiving the end of the hoistingrope. The shaft 0 at one end outside of its bearing is bent to form a hand-crank, F. In a hole, 0, formed in the frame D is received a hook, d, which is capable of engaging and holding the arm of the crank F. The extremity of the shank E is reduced in diameter, and screw-threaded to receiveanut, e. Thelarger portion of the shankadjoining the frame D is cylindrical in form, and arranged eccentrically with reference to the threaded portion, and is provided with a longitudinal rib, f. Upon the threaded portion of the shank E is placed an arm, G, which upon one side of the shank E extends laterally parallel with the body of the frame D, and upon the opposite side of the shank E is curved over toward the fit the larger portion of the shank and the rib f formed thereon.
In the wagon-house sheaves g g are suspended from the joists h h of the upper door or ceiling of the house, and a rope, H, attached at one end to the drum B of the windlass, extends over the sheaves g g, and is provided with a loop, 2', at its free end to receive the end of a wagon box or bed.
hoist is as follows: The wagon from which the bed is to be lifted is placed under the sheaves g g, and the windlass A is clamped to the wagon-bed or Wagon-box bottom by placing the frame D above and the arm G below the end of the bottom andtightening the screw e, so as to cause the arm G to bear against the bed and force it against the frame D, the curved end of the arm having abearing against is now unreeled from the drum B, and the box'opposite that to which the'windlass A is attached. By turning the windlass the rope .H is wound thereon, and the wagon-box is hoisted clear of the wagon, and when it is raised sufficiently high the hook d is brought into engagement with the arm of the crank, as shown in Fig. 2, thus preventing the shaft 0 from turning. box upon the wagon is effected by reversing the operation just described.
I preferably suspend the sheave 9 below the end of the box carrying the windlass.
Having thus described my invention, what Patent, is-- 1. The. combination, with the rope H and an adjustable and removable clamp for engaging the wagon-bed, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, in a wagon-bed hoist, of the drum B, provided with the crank F, the frame D, having the shank E, made in two diameters, and provided with the rib f, the arm G, having a curved end fitted to the larger the larger part of the shank E. A rope, H,
