SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,413, dated September 21, 1886.

the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Eyeglasses, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to eyeglasses of that class provided with springnose-pieces and a connecting bow-spring; and the invention consists of a pair of eyeglasses which are provided -with nose pieces, the lower ends of which are attached to clips of the glasses, while the upper ends are slotted and guided in clips at the upper parts of the glasses, said clips having seatsor shoulders for the ends of the bowspring, which ends are attached by screws that serve, in connection with the space below the shoulders of the clips, to guide and stop the flexible nose-pieces, as will more fully appear hereinafter, and finally be pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved eyeglasses. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through one of the upper clips, drawn on a larger scale; and Figs. 3 and4are a horizontal section and a vertical transverse section, respectively, 011 line y y and w 00, Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings, a a represent the flexible nose-pieces, the lower ends of which are attached to clips I) of the frame b of the glasses or to the glasses themselves. I am aware that eyeglasses with flexible nose-pieces the upper ends of which are capable of lateral movement are well known, and I therefore do not claim this feature, broadly; but in these cases the upper ends were either not guided at all, or guided in such a manner that projecting portions are formed on which the handkerchief is caught when cleaning the glasses. The objection is entirely avoided by my construction, which has no projecting parts,

and in which eyeglasses represent a regular and symmetrical appearance,as the nose-pieces are guided in the supporting-clips of the bowspring.

Having thus described'my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the flexible nose-pieces, attached at their lower ends to clips of the eyeglasses, and having slotted upper ends, guideclips attached to the upper part of the glasses, said clips having inwardly-projecting shoulders or seats, a bow-spring, the ends of which rest on said shoulders, and .screws for fastening the ends of the bow-spring to the clips and retaining theslotted ends of the nose-pieces in the guide spaces below the shoulders of the clips, substantially as set forth.
