MASON W. DAVIS, OF SOUTHBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
SPECTACLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,552, dated August 30, 1892.
Application filedMay 17, 1892- Serial No. 433,379. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MASON W. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Southbridge, in the county of ,Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Spectacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and usefulimprovementsin spectacle-frames; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of this invention is to provide simple and convenient means of attaching the nose or bridge piece to the glass-frames, wherein the same may be readily attached or detached, and when mounted in position will be securely held and readily substituted by another bridge in case of breakage or injury, without dispensing with the use of the entire frame.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a pair of spectacles embodying the improved construction. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the parts detached and shown on an enlarged scale.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the frame of a pair of spectacles, which may be of any preferred construction and having glasses 2 therein, as in the ordinary form of devices of this class.
To the inner central portion of each of the glass-frames composing the frame entire is formed a recessed lug 3, having the two sides thereof straight and forming limitingwalls, as at 4, and also provided with a screwopening 5. The nose or bridge piece 6 is arranged at an angle of inclination and has the ends thereof bent back upon themselves to form laterally-extending depending guards and terminating in rearwardlyprojecting horizontal arms 7, whose extreme outer ends 8 are flattened or increased in cross-sectional extent and each formed with a screw-opening 9. The said ends 8 are fitted in the re cesses of the lugs 3 and retained in proper position by the limiting-walls 4. When the said flattened or extended ends 8 of the nose or bridge piece are inserted in the lugs 3, screws 10 are fitted to the openings 9 and 5 to securely hold the said nose or bridge piece intact with the frame, and also by this form of construction the parts of the frame are securely mounted in a simple and convenient manner, which is strong and durable, easily and readily applied, and comparatively inexexpensive in manufacture. When the nose or bridge piece is secured in position, the depending guards of the arms 7 prevent contact of the nose or adjacent portions of the face with the lugs 3, as will be readily seen. It will be seen that the nose or bridge piece is interchangeable by means of the construction set forth, and that one may be substituted in place of another form of the same, thereby making it very convenient to accommodate different forms and requirements.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a spectacle-frame,the combination, with the glass rims or frames, of lugs formed with and extending at right angles across the inner central portions thereof and having recesses in their upper sides to form limitingwalls and also provided with vertical screwopenings extending centrally therethrough, a nose or bridge piece having the ends thereof bent back upon themselves to form laterallyextending depending guards and terminating in rearwardly-project-ing horizontal arms at right angles to the said nose or bridge piece and formed with flattened ends with openings therethrough to fit the said lugs, and screws for connecting said parts, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MASON W. DAVIS.
Witnesses:
