I In mmm,
UNITED STATES PATENT SAMUEL W. HARMAN, OF ALICEVILLE, KANSAS.
WIRE-STRETCHER.
SPEGIEICATIONI01ming part of Letters Patent N0. 349041 dated September 14, 1886.
Applicafi0n filed 1\Iay S28, 1866. Serial N0. 203,52].
T0 all whom itmay concern:
Be it known thab I, SAMUEL W. IIARMAN, a citizen 0f the United States, residing ab Aliceville, in the county 0f Coffey and State of Kan sas, have invented cerbain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Stretchers; and I do deelare the following 130 be a full, elear, und exact deser iption of the invention, such es will ena ble others skilled in the art to which ib appertains t0 make and use thesame, reference being had 130 the accompanying drawings, and t0 the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, whieh form a part 0f this speeification.
My invention has for it's object 130 provide a nove1 construebion in wire-stretching machines, by means ot' which the wire is sbretched ab any requiredheight along a 1ine 0f pests; and it eousists in the novel eombination 0f parts, as will be hereinafter fully deseribed.
In the accompanying drawings, in whieh eorresponding parts are designated by similar lebters, Figure l represents a side elevation 0f my improved. wire=stretehing maehine. Fig. 2 is an end view, 2u1d Figs. 3 and 4 detail views, thereof.
Referring to the drawings, A A represent bed-pieces made in the f0rrn 0f runners, upon which the entire machine rests, t0 be provided with holes er recesses f0r inserting pins, staples, and the like for seeuring them t0 the ground. a a are 'nprights er standards seeured t0 the seid runners and extending somewhab above the cross-frame a, the Same being provided witl1 holes for the bearings of the ax1e B. This axle carries the ratchet-wheel b ab one side 0f the bearing, and upon the opposite side acog-wheel, b, whieh meshes with the cog-wheel O, attached t0 the frame-work by an axle that runs en'tirel y across the szune, und provided with a erank, c, by means of whieh the axle B is rotated carrying and winding upon it the r0pe c". T0 the rope is attached an automatic inslarument in the f01n1 of pinehers 01 tongs, for gripping und securely holding the wire to be sbretched.
Upon the innerside of the f rame a"is seeured a paw1, E, which is adapted to eome ineontact with the rat-chet-wheel b and prevenb the said. axle B from tnrning backward until' released.
Ab one end 0f the machine are seeured two uprights, F, provided With s lots f, that extend (N0 model.)
their entire length, and having /\-shaped projeetionsupon bheir inner surfaces f0r reeeiving the slidesf, in 'whicl1 the axle G is secured, seid slides having V-shaped grooves, and seid. ax1e earrying upon it the loose pulley g, under which the -rope c is adjusted so any height desired, thereby rendering it easy in spacing the wire in a 1ine upon the posts, and als-the same t.ime holding it in plaee until fastened thereto. 'Ihe uprights f are provided with holes, an a corresponding hole is formed in the slide f, throughwhich the pin or holt r isinserted for retaining the s1ide firmly in position ab any height desired.
In carrying oub my invention ib will be 0bserved thai: the wire 110 be stretched is grasped by the pinchers 01 tongs D, provided with holes in the handles, through which the rope 0 is seeured and carried under the adjustable 1'011- er g, and from thenee 110 the axle B, where it is wound and tightened by the crank c, attaehed to the eog-wheel C, meshing with whee1 b, secured t0 the ax1e B, whieh is he1d againsl: the tension 0f the wire by the paw1 E pressing against the ratchet-wheel b.
Having thus deseribed my invention, I clairn and desire 110 seeure by Letters Patent 1. In a wire-stretching machine, the combination 0f the runners A A, uprights a a, crosspieces a, axle B, cog-wheels band C, crank c, ratchet-wheel b, pawl E, rope c pinehers 01 tongs D, uprights F, provided wiuh slots f, having /\-shaped projeetions, the slidef, having V-shaped grooves, the axle G, carrying the loose pulley g, and the pin 01 holt o, as and f0r the purpose described.
2. In awire-stretching maehine, the combination of the runners A A, uprights a a, crosspieces a, paw1 E, 1ope o pinchers 01 tongs D, uprights F, provided With slots f, having shaped projeetions, the s1ides f, having V- shaped grooves, and the ax1e G, carrying the loose pulley g, es and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix m y signature in presenee of two witnesses.
SAMUEL W. HARMAN.
