ALBERT J. COATS, OF EAGLE, \VISOONSIN.
COMBINATION STOVE RACK AND SHELF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,889, dated September 7, 1886.
Application filed March 5, 1885. Serial No. 157,763. (No model.) i
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT .T. COATS, of Eagle, in the county of \Vaukesha and State ofWisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Stove Racks and Shelves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of stove attachments which serve, as desired, for racks or shelves; and its objects are, first, a detachable adjustable shelf, and, second, a shelf composed of folding arms, which may be unfolded to furnish suitable support in any desired position for various culinary utensils.
In the accompanying drawings, like letters refer to the same parts in each figure.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my device, shown partly in shelf and partly in rack form. Fig. 2 is the vertical section of the same on the line to w of Fig. 1, with the locking-frame A applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section,on the lineyg ofFig. 1, of the middle seg ment of one of the folding arms. Fig. i is a like section, 011 the line 00 as, Fig. 1, of the outersegment of one ofthe folding arms. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of my complete device inverted. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the same on an enlarged scale with the locking-frame A removed. Figs. 7 and8 are detail views upon an enlarged scale, Fig. 8 showing a vertical section of a folding arm on the line zz, Fig. 1.
B is a ledge or bracket secured at thepoints I) to section 0 of the collar, by which said I I at 11.
more segments hinged to each other at K K, and tongued and grooved on their adjacent edges, so as to fold together laterally and interlock, as shown in Fig. 8. hen folded together to form a shelf, as shown in Figs. 5 and (i, the ends M M of the segments of arinsKK enter the channel between the plates I Lwhich support them at those points. Section C of the collar or band, which surrounds the pipe N, is provided at its ends with the upturned hooks D D, adapted to engage with the loops or links P P on the ends of the remaining section, 0, ofsaid collar, section 0 being beveled on its upper edge, as shown at c, Fig. 2, so as to allow the shelf to be tipped in an upward direction, thereby detaching the hooks D D from the loops or links 1) p. It will be seen that the section 0 is quite broad, bearing against the pipe N, below the general level of the shelf, and that the hooks 1) D are formed near its upper edge. By this construction the shelf is in effect fnlcrumcd at D D, and its weight, with that of any article resting there on, bears laterally against the pipe N through the broad section 0, thereby clamping the collar O O snugly about said pipe N, and pre to receive the outer ends of the folded arms, 7
and is provided, as seen in Fig. 2, with a rightanglcd tongue, T, which engages with transverse grooves U U, formed near the outer ends of the segments composing arms K when the same are folded together. It is further provided with thebuttons or latches \V V, pivoted to its ends, so as to close the ends of channel S and retain the ends of-arms K therein.
My improved device is manipulated as follows: Having been secured about the pipe N by collar 0 O, the shelf may be adjusted to the required position by raising the front edge sufficiently to loosen the sections 0 and O of said collar, when they can be easily turned, raised, or lowered upon the pipe and set at any desired point by releasing the shelf, the leverage of which, exerted through the hooks D D,causes said sections 0 and O to bind. If
a rack is desired, the buttons \V XV are thrown back, releasing the loeking-frame A, which is removed, and the arms K K unfolded laterally and disposed as desired. A part of the arms may be unfolded and used as racks, and apart folded to form a shelf as seen in Fig. 1.
Thel0ckingframe, when not in use upon the front edge of theshelf, may be conveniently disposed of and utilized as an additional arm to the rack by inserting one end between the right-angled projections X X on the under side of bracket B, Figs. 5 and 6, in the position shown in Fig. 1.
The device can be readily removed from the pipe N by raising it at the front edge and de ta'ehing the hooks D D from links P P.
I elaim- 1. The combination of the bracket Band the folding arms K K, consisting of two or more sections pivoted or hinged thereto and folding laterally, substantially as and for thepurposes mentioned.
2. The combination of the bracket B, the folding arms K K, consisting of two or more sections pivoted or hinged thereto folding laterally, and the locking frame or bar A,applied to the outer edge of the shelf by the means and in the manner above set forth, as and for the purposes herein mentioned.
ALBERT J. COATS.
