Description

(No Model.)
H. T. KEITH.
LAMP SUPPORT.
INVENTOR l:zo spending parts in all the figures.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRISON T. KEITH, OF PRINCETON, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN SCHAIBLE, OF SAME PLACE.
LAMP-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,746, dated September 7, 1886.
Application lilcd March 15, 1886. Serial No. 105,214.
To all whom it Iii/ay concern.-
Be it known that l, HARRIsoN T. KEITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Princeton, in the county of .Gibson and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Supports; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view showing my I5 improved lamp support applied. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the support with one adjustable frame inverted, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the saine.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre- Myinvention has relation to brackets or supports for lamps, by means of which a lamp may be supported above a table or shelf or `fiat chair-arm, or any other similar object;
and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of such a bracket or Support, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a hollow tube, from the lower end of which projects an arm, I3, the out-er end of which has a vertical screw-threaded perforation, O, within which a thumb-screw, D, iits and turns, and a lip, E, projects lfrom near the upper end of this tube above the upper end ol" the thumb-screw. A rod, F, slides in the tube and may be adj usted within the tube by means of a set-screw, G, at the upper end of the tube, and the upper end of the rod is 4.o provided with an outwardly-projecting arm, II, the outer end ol` which is formed with a smooth vertical eye, I. A frame, K, having a partial ring at one end and a lug, J, provided with a central screw-threaded socket projecting from the other end, is pivotally secured to the arm II by inserting the lug` J into the eye I and turning a thumb-screw, L, into said lug, the shoulder of said screw bearing against the under side of the arm I-I. A
5o sleeve, M, projects vertically from the frame K, a hole being formed in said frame to register with the bore of said sleeve. This sleeve is provided at its lower end with a set-screw,
(No model.)
N, by means of which the vertical shank O of n a frame, P, forming a portion of a circle, may be adjusted within the sleeve, the said shank standing at a right angle to the plane of the frame, which is ina plane parallel with the plane of the eyed frame. The reservoir and foot of a lamp may be supported by means of 6o these frames, the frame having the sliding shank being the smaller of the frames, and it will be seen that by having the smaller frame below the larger frame the reservoir may rest in the larger frame and bear upon the smaller frame, which holds the foot; or, if the lamp is provided with a narrower portion above the reservoir, the said narrow portion may be clamped by the smaller frame, which in that case will be above the larger frame.
The several portions of the support or bracket may be slid in or out and be turned so as to place the lamp at any level and in various positions, and the support may either be secured to a shelf or similar object with the rod projecting downward, or it may have the sleeve andsliding rod projecting upward, the frames supporting the reservoir ot' the lamp being reversed in their positions according to the construction of the reservoir of the lamp. 8o
The support may be used clamped to flat arms of chairs, shelves, tables, or any other objects where it may be desired to have a lamp supported, and the support may likewise prove y useful for dentist-s as a support for a basin or cuspidor upon the dental chair.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination of a bracket, an adjustable 9o lampsupporting frame having a tube projecting perpendicularly from its under side, a setscrew in the tube near one end thereof, and a supplemental reversible supporting frame formed of one piece of wire with one end bent into a partial ring and the other bent at right angles to the plane of the ring, said supplemental frame adapted to t adj ustably in said tube, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
W'itnesses: HARRISON T. KEITH.
L. W. GUDGEL, JAMES MCKEDY.
