Description

Dec. 23, 1969 6.1'. YARBRouGl-l 3,484,943
BRICK'LAYER' S GAUGE Filed Oct. 18. 1967 United States Patent() 3,484,943 BRICKLAYERS GAUGE Granville Ted Yarbrough, P.0. Box 138, Matthews, Mo. 63867 Filed Oct. 18, 1967, Ser. No. 676,272 Int. CI. G01b 5/24, 5/14, 3/30 U.S. Cl. 33-180 3 Claims ABSTRACT F THE DISCLOSURE SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A masons fingerless glove having a separate thumb receptacle and a leveling member extending rearwardly from the base of the thumb receptacle and away from the palm of the glove with the member having length sufcient to extend beneath the heel of the thumb and to overlie the abutting ends of adjacent bricks without interfering with the utilization of the glove hand in the continued function of laying a level course of bricks.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed. l
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing in which is shown forms of construction embodying the invention, and in which:
FIG. l is a perspective view of a fingerless glove type bricklayers guage;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the apparatus as shown in FIG. l in use;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of a bricklayers guage; and
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the modified form of the bricklayers guage in use.
Referring to FIG. 1 of the drawings there is shown a gauge which includes a ngerless glove having a complete palm covering section 11 and a partial thumb receiving portion 12. The full length of the hand extremities 13 as well as the wrist 14 are free and unencumbered by the glove 10 as well as the leveling gauge 15 hereinafter described.
Carried by the glove 10 is the leveling gauge 15 which is preferably in the form of an elongated substantially at metallic piece having one end 16 reversely bent to form a clip 17 adapted to embrace the outer edge 18 of the thumb receiving portion 12 of the glove 10 as seen in FIGS. l and 2.
The free end 19 of the clip 17 may project out of a slot 20 formed in the glove 10` at a point adjacent the junction between the palm covering section 11 and the thumb receiving portion 12 in a manner to maintain the level gauge in a desired relation with respect to the heel of the thumb and the extremities 13 of the hand, while permitting limited positioning of the free end 21 of the gauge 15 relative to the glove 10.
In use a mason or bricklayer will place the glove 10 3,484,943 Patented Dec. 23, 1969 on the hand which normally is utilized. in gripping and placing bricks in desired positions with respect to each other. By the construction hereinbefore described the extremities 13 as well as a major portion of the thumb 22 of such hand is free to grip a brick and position it during the bricklaying operation. The glove 10 will not interfere with the free wrist action nor does the invention include any protusions which would interfere with the normal free movement of the arm and hand of the mason during a bricklaying operation. As the brick 23 to be layed is gripped in the gloved hand the leveling gauge 15 will have a portion thereof in facial abutment with the top surface 24 of such brick, with its free end 21 extending beyond the abutting end 25 of such brick. The length of the gauge 15 is such that its free end 21 will overlie the mortar joint 26 between the brick 23 to be laid and the adjacent previously laid brick 27 such that by a slight pressure by the heel of the thumb of the gloved hand upon the leveling gauge 15, the mason may be assured of a horizontal alignment of the upper surfaces of the bricks as the same are laid in a continuing course.
FIGS. 3 and 4 disclose a modified form of attachment of the leveling gauge to the masons hand. This attachment is in the form of a harness 28 including a wrist band 29 adjustably embracing the wrist 14 by means of a buckle 30. A post member 31 having one end connected in any convenient manner to the harness 28, extends away from the band 29 and has its opposite end connected as at 32 to one end of the clip end 33 of the leveling gauge 34.
A thumb ring 35 is connected to the forward end of the leveling gauge 34 and is of a size to freely receive the thumb 36 of the masons hand so as to cooperate with the wrist band 29 and post 31 to place the leveling gauge 34 beneath the heel portion 37 of the masons hand as the instrumentality is utilized as hereinbefore described.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification Without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters -Patent is:
1. A bricklayers gauge including:
(a) a fingerless hand-wearing member having a separate thumb receiving portion and palm covering section,
(b) a leveling gauge carried by said member extending rearwardly away from the palm covering section of the member and beneath the heel of the thumb received in the thumb receiving portion of said member,
(c) a clip for connecting said leveling gauge to a portion of said thumb receiving portion, said clip formed by a reversely bent end portion of said leveling gauge with the clip embracing an exposed. edge portion of said thumb receiving portion,
(d) said gauge being of a length sufiicient to extend from beneath the heel of the thumb Iand overlap the abutting mortar joint between successively laid bricks without interfering with the thumb and extremities of the bricklayers hand.
2. The bricklayers gauge as defined by claim 1 wherein said leveling gauge comprises an elongated substantially flat metallic piece, the free end of which extends away from the palm of the hand audubeneath the heel of the i .Y 3,185,748 6/1965 Moody 33--207 thumb. 3,290,712 12/ 1966 Richey.
3. A bricklayers gauge as dened by claim 1 wherein said ngerless member includes a harness providing a WILLIAM D- MARTIN, JR Primary Examiner wrist band and a thumb receiving ring with said leveling gauge connected thereto.
