Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VALENTINE MOTT, OF ROSLYN, NEW YORK.
lMPROVEM ENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 34,843, dated April 1, 1862.
To all whom it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, VALENTINE MOTT, of Roslyn, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full` clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, whereinW Figure 1 is a plan, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section, of my said washing-machine.
Similar letters refer to the same parts in both figures.
My invention consists of a conical luted roller, with spring-bearings, in combination with a revolving tub containing inclined tapering rollers, and which tub is adjustable to increase or decrease the pressure between the said conical iuted roller and the clothes that lie on the inclined bed formed by the aforesaid inclined tapering rollers.
In the drawings, ot is a frame of suitable construction, receiving the parts, and the head-piece a of the said frame should be made with tenons and pins, so that the same can be removed when the tub b is to be introduced or removed. The tub bis mounted on a center spindle c, that passes through the head-piece a at the top and rests at the bot- -toin upon the adjustingscrew d. d is a setnut to hold said screw d from turning when the position of the tub has been adjusted.
Within the tub b are inclined tapering rollers e e, set closely together, so as to form a conical bed of rollers, and each roller may be allowed to turn sufficiently to prevent the wear, when in use, being all on one side, and to yield or turn and prevent undue strain on the clothes in washing. A ring is provided around the inside of the tub b, to take the axes of these rollers e e at their larger ends, and the smaller ends of said rollers are dropped into recesses in a collar f around the spindle o, and kept in place by a ring or collar screwed down above.
g is a shaft provided with a crank or iiywheel h, and standing radially to the tub, and k is a conical fluted roller on said shaft.
The bearings Z Z for this shaft g are fitted with springs, as seen in Fig. 2, in order that the said roller and shaft may yield to the clothes passing between the roller k and the surface of rollers e e. As the roller 1c is turned it revolves the tub b and the contents thereof, and hence the clothes are brought around successively and compressed by the roller, squeezing out the Water, and at the same time rubbing them, because the roller la will slip on them to a certain extent, and where any portion of the clothes requires Vadditional rubbing the tub can be slightly detained by the hand while the roller kis still revolved.
The tub b should be provided with a faucet or plug for discharging the water when necessary.
Vhat I claim, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-
The conical iluted roller 7a, iitted as specified, in combination with the revolving tub b, containing the conical surface formed by the inclined tapering rollers, the parts being fitted and acting substantially as and for the .l
purposes specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 24th day of February, 1862.
VALENTINE MOTT. Witnesses:
