LEE DARE, OF LA GRO, INDIANA.
CRUPPER-FORMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,319, dated August 31, 1886.
Application filed November 12, 1885. Serial No. 182,596. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEE DARE, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Gro, in the State of Indiaila, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crupper-Formers, of which the following is a specification, to wit:
This invention relates to crupper-formers; and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction and operation of the same, sub stantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and, operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my ma chine; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly broken away.
Arepresent-s aformer of the requisite shape, around which the main body of the crupper is formed, and which is provided with a projecting arm, a, on which slides a clampingframe, 13, having an adjusting screw, 1), the point of which presses against the main part of the former to force them apart. The upper portion of this clamping-frame is forked, as at b, and between the forks are hinged two clamping-levers, O G, the lower ends of which are eccentrically curved and serrated, as ate, to grip the ends of the crupper-blank while in the process of forming.
The crupper is stuffed and sewed up in the usual manner, and then while wet is placed in the former, its ends separately secured by the two clamping levers, and by means of the screw b drawn out till the device is properly held in the form, and is then left to dry or set in this position.
I am aware that in similar machines a single clamping lever has been used, under which both ends of the crupper are placed; but as leather often varies in thickness one end will not be clamped and held tight enough for the purpose in view, while in this device each end, being held by separate and independently actinglevers, is firmly clamped, no matter what the thickness may be.
Having thus fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a crupper-former, the combination, with the former A, having an arm, a, of the sliding frame B, adjusting-screw b, and the two clamping-levers O 0, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEE DARE.
