WILBURN DILLEN, OF ATOHISON, NODAWAY COUNTY, MISSOURI.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,193, dated August 31, 1886.
Application tiled February 5, 1886.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILBURN DILLEN, a citizen of Atchison township, residing near Clearmont, in the county of Nodaway and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such` as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon ,which form a part of this specification.
The object of this improvement is to pro. vide a plow with a device of simple, economical construction, that may be efficiently used while the plow is in motion, for relieving the same of stubble or other trash that accumulates about the share. These results are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the drawings herewith iiled as part hereof, in which the same letters of reference denote the same parts in the different views.
Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, representing a plow provided with a de-l vice embodying the features of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional view representing parts enlarged. Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation illustrating a modification of one of the parts for the purpose of applying the device toiron-beam plows.
A B B Bl represent the draft-beam, handles, shares, and landside of a plow.
C is a flanged plate provided with perforations ce, (more fully shown in Fig.2,) for the reception of bolts or screws,by means of which the plate C is secured to the plow-beam, substantially in the position shown in Fig. I. The plate C is provided with a central perforation for the reception of the shank of a slotted eye, D, which is secured to the plate C by riveting its shank to a countersunk circular plate or washer, d. The shank of theeye D is tted loosely to the perforation in the plate O.
H is a curved metal bar provided with diate thereof for the purpose of pivotally connecting the bar H to the eye D, by means of a bolt, d.
K is a rod affixed to the eye h2 of the bar H, and to the inside 0f the plow-handle B by means of a staple. (Not shown.)
Referring to the modification shown in Fig.
3, E is a stirrup having rounded and screw- Serial No. 190,914. (No model.)
threaded ends for the reception of plates F G and nuts, as shown. The stirrn p E is also provided with a perforation for the reception of the shank of an eye, D, which is movably affixed thereto in the same manner as the plate C. The square parts of the stirrup E form shoulders to the rounded parts that hold the plate F in the position shown when the stirrup is secured to an iron-beam plow, which is done by setting the rounded parts across the same and applying the plate G and nuts, as shown, and the plate F will clear the circular head which secures to the stirrup the slotted eye D, to which the curved bar H is attached by means of the bolt d'.
The operation of the device is as follows: Vhen the stubble and trash accumulate about the plow share, the adjacent part ofthe bar II is given a forward and back movement by pulling and pushing on the rod K,as the shank of the eye D will turn in the plate C. Ordinarily the forward and back movement ofthe bar H will be suflicient to disengage the trash from the plow, but not always, and in order to make the device meet contingencies that often arise, the bar H is pivoted to the eye D, as shown, and thereby arranged to be actuated laterally across the course of the plow, for the double purpose of effectually clearing the plow of trash and also throwing the same to the plowed ground in order to prevent it from again gathering about the plow. The lateral movement mentioned is given to the barH by bearing on the rod K, which will operate as a lever, and the staple which secures it to the plow-handle will act as its fulcrum.
I am aware that plowcleaners arranged to operate in longitudinal and transverse directions have been invented heretofore, and I therefore do not claim such features, broadly; but
Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Lctters Patent, is-
111 a plow-cleaning device, the cleaning-bar pivoted to and arranged to osciliate transverely in an eye pivotally secured to a plate fixed to the plow-beam, as shown, and arf ranged to oscillate longitudinally thereto, in combination vwith the eye, the plate, the plow, and the operating-rod, .as specified.
In testimony whereof I'afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses: WILBURN DILLEN.
