BAILER DUMP BOTTOM Filed Dec. 27, 1967 INVENTOR. Warren M Z/nyy d'lum w HGENT United States Patent 3,477,758 BAILER DUMP BOTTOM Warren M. Zingg, Tulsa, Okla., assignor to The Dow Chemical Company, Midland, MiclL, a corporation of Delaware Filed Dec. 27, 1967, Ser. No. 693,812 Int. Cl. E21b 43/04, 23/06 US. Cl. 294-69 4 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to dump bailers and particularly to dump bailers of the full open discharge type.
Most dump bailers are of the dart type and are capable of handling fluid or a slurry as long as the nature of the fluid is such that it will flow through and around the dart.
Glass bottom bailers have been used to run gravel, rock, etc. to the bottom of a well bore by setting down the bailer hard enough to break the glass. Neither of these methods are satisfactory where bags of blasting agent comprising an ammonium nitrate based explosive containing water, other liquid extenders, particulate metal, and thickening agents (other sensitizing agents also can be included), for example, are to be deposited at predetermined positions in a well bore.
Accordingly, a principal object of this invention is to provide an improved full open discharge type dump bailer.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved dump bailer which is adapted to carry and dump bagged material.
In accordance with this invention, there is provided an elongated tubular bailer having cable attachment means at one open end part and a full open discharge means including a pivotally held flapper closure element which is retained in position by a scar element disposed on a trigger arm which is pivotally attached to the side wall of the bailer.
When the trigger arm is depressed upwardly, the resulting movement of the sear element disengages the edge of the flapper which is disposed opposite to the flapper pivot, dropping the flapper and opening the bottom of the bailer.
The invention, as well as additional objects and advantages thereof, will best be understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a side elevational view, in section, of a bailer in accordance with this invention;
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary view, partly broken away and in section, of the lower end of the bailer shown in FIG. 1, and
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a dump bailer, indicated generally by the numeral comprising an elongated tubular body part 12. A cable attachment loop 14 is secured to the upper end of the body section 12. A tubular bottom section 16, fixedly coupled to the lower part of the body section 12, contains a dump assembly 3 ,477,7 58 Patented Nov. 11, 19 9 ice comprising a flapper type closure member 32 which has a neck 38 which is pivotally coupled by means of the rod 30 which extends through the bore 40 in the neck 38 and through bores 42, 44 in the wall of the bottom section 16. The side wall of the bottom section 16 has a longitudinally extending slot 46 into which the neck 38 fits.
The lower end of the bottom section 16 is cut away from just below the bores 42, 44 to near the center of the bottom 48 of the section.
A trigger arm, 20, has an elongated part 21 to which is attached a plate 18 which presents a wider surface than that of the arm to any obstruction it meets as the bailer is. lowered in a bore hole.
. The trigger arm has a part 34 which, when it engages and holds the flapper type closure member 32, is disposed in alignment with the longitudinal axis of the bailer; The part 34 contains a notch 22 on which rests the edge of the member 32 which is opposite the neck 38. The depth and walls of the notch 22 are such that material contained in the bailer may not force the flapper closure member 32 over-center.
The trigger arm 20 is pivoted through the part 34 by means of a pin 24 extending through the walls of the section 16 and across the longitudinally extending slot 26 in the bottom part of the section 16, in the same manner as shown in FIG. 3, for example.
The elongated part 21 of the trigger is disposed at an angle of about 135 degrees as measured between the notch 22 and the plate 18.
In operation, the bailer 10, loaded with packaged materials which rests against the closure member 32 which is held in position across the bailer by the notch 22 in the trigger arm 20.
As the plate 18 bears against the bottom of the bore hole (not shown) or against material present in the bore hole, the trigger arm 20* is moved upwardly, moving the notch 22 on the part 34 away from the edge of the flapper closure member 32.
As the notch 22 moves, the edge of the flapper member 32 is released, dropping the flapper closure member 32 so that it is more or less aligned with the side wall of the bailer 10. As the flapper closure member 32 is released, the trigger arm 20 drops downwardly, leaving a more or less full open discharge path for the release from the bailer of the packaged goods contained therein.
Thus, it may be seen that this invention provides a simple, fool proof full opening dump bailer bottom.
What is claimed is:
1. A dump bailer comprising an elongated tubular body having side walls, top part and bottom part, cable attachment means secured to said top part, and a releasable closure mechanism at said bottom part, said closure mechanism including a pair of diametrically opposed slots extending upwardly from the lower end of said bottom part, one of said slots extending above the other slot, a flapper type closure element having a pivotable coupling at one end thereof, said coupling being secured to said side wall adjacent to and aligned with said slot which extends above the other slot and having an opposed edge, a trigger assembly comprising an elongated arm section and a shorter arm section, said arm sections being rigidly coupled together at an included angle which is between and 150, said shorter arm being pivotally coupled with respect to said body adjacent to and in alignment with said other slot, said shorter arm having a notch facing and engaging said opposed edge when said elongated arm extends below said body at an angle of between 110 and 150 with respect to the longitudinal axis of said body.
2. A dump bailer in accordance with. claim 1, wherein said included angle is approximately 3 3. A dump bailer in accordance with claim 1, wherein said elongated arm extends below said body at an angle of approximately 135 degrees with respect to the longitudinal axis of said body when said notch is in its stable flapper closure element retaining position.
4. A dump bailer in accordance with claim 1, wherein the length of said shorter arm is substantially greater than the thickness of said flapper element.
