Description

(No Model.) I
M. A. SPARKS.
GATE POST.
Patented Aug. 17
JJVVEJVTOR WITQNESSES PATENT OFFICE.
MAJOR A. SPARKS, OF HONEY CREEK, ILLINOIS.
GATE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed May 6, 1886.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAJOR A. SPARKS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Honey Creek township, in the county of Crawford and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in posts for swinging gates, the object of my improvement being to provide a means whereby the post can be adjusted at an angle so as to elevate the forward end of the gate to allow small animals to pass under the same; and to this end my invention consistsin the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter .fully set forth and specifically pointed outin I gate-post, whereby the gate is hinged to said post. This gate A is provided with a sliding bolt, 0, which is of greater length than the bolts usually employed for such purposes, so that it may engage with a stationary grooved post A, when the gate is tilted. The post A is of ordinary construction, and is provided with alongitudinal groove, 0', within which the end of the sliding. bolt, which is carried by the swinging gate, will lie, to hold said gate in a closed position.
B refers to a stationary sillpiece, which has rigidly attached thereto barsD D,. which are also stationary, said bars and sill piece being suitably secured to the ground in a permanent manner.
The post E, to which the gate is hung, is pivotally secured to the bars D D by means of a bolt, 6, said bolt passing through each of the bars D D.
Patent No'. 347,658, dated August 17, 1886.
Serial No. 201,353. (No model.)
In order to prevent a lateral motion of the post E braces F F are provided, which are pivotally secured by means of boltsf, near the upper end of the post E, and by means of the boltsf to the sill B.
To the upper part of the post E a brace,
the lower portion of this brace being secured to a lever, H, the lower portion of said lever being pivoted to the bars D D by means of a bolt, h.
In front of the lever H, to the bars D D, is attached a bolt, 1, against which the lever will abut when the gate is in a horizontal position and the gate-post in a vertical position.
When it is desired that the front end of the gate be elevated, the handle of the lever H is depressed and a wedge, I, inserted between the front edge of said lever and the cross bolt 1', thus holding the post in an inclined position. By means of this wedge I the angle of the gate may be varied.
By means of the post hercinbefore de scribed the gate may be tilted so that its front end may be elevated, and the angle of the post may be varied so as to overcome'any sagging of the gate.
The device hereinbefore described is simple in construction and effective in operation, and may be used in connection with gates of ordinary construction.
I claim- 1. The combination, with a swinging gate, of the post E, to which the gate is pivotally attached, the sill-piece B, having parallel bars D D, rigidly attached thereto, a crossbar, i, the bar G, pivotally attached near the upper portion of the post E and to a lever, II, the post and lever being pivoted to the bars D, and means for retaining the lever in position,
- substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth. w
2. In combination with a swinging gate, an adjustable supporting-post pivotally secured to a stationary sill, and provided with pivoted brace bars F F, bar G, attached to a lever, H, and a wedge, I, for securing said lever, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\Vitnesses: MAJOR A. SPARKS.
