HARVEY BROWN, OF PAYSON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 3,474, dated March 9, 1844.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARVEY BROWN, of Payson, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful ImprovementinCombinedPlows,calledBrowns Combined Plows, which is described as follows, reference being had to the annexed drawings of the same, making part of this specification.
Figure l is a top view of the frame of adjustable combined plows and the axle and propelling-wheels. Fig. 2 is a side view of a left hand plowand beam detached from the frame. Fig. 3 is a side view of a right-hand plow detached from the frame; Fig. 4, a back view of a right-hand plowshare and oblique rod; Fig. 5, a back view of a left-hnd plowshare. Fig. 6 is a pattern ofthe piece of metal that forms the plow represented in Fig. 5, when the curved and angular projections are bent. Fig. 7 is a pattern of the piece of metal to form the plow represented in Fig. 4. Fig.8 is a perspective view of one of the plows detached from the standard or sheth.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The wheels and axle A A, I make in the manner represented in Fig. 1, or in any convenient way.
TheframeB,containingtheadjustableplows, and attached by links (1 to devices I), that embrace said axle A, is of a rectangular shape, of any convenient size, strength, and material. The transverse timbers of said frame are perforated to admit the vertical bolts G of the adjustable beams, hereinafter described.
The adjustable beams (marked 12) to which the plows are attached are arranged in said frame parallel with the sides thereof. Each beam is notched on the under side, near the ends thereof, to correspond with the front and back timbers of the frame, to which they are fitted and bolted by the bolts G.
The sheths or standards S are made and inserted into the beams b in the usual mannet.
The mold-boards and landsides, which are made in a peculiar manner, are bolted to the standards or sheths by bolts K.
The rear end of the frame B, containing the plows G,is sustained or supported by a wheel,
E, that turns on the ground. This wheel turns in a forked rod or slide elevated or depressed at pleasure.
The seat for the driver is at the rear end'of the frame.
The notched devices I) embrace the axle A, and by the ring or link cl the frame is raised or loweredin said devices for plowing deeper or shallower, as desired.
The mold board and landside, when made of wrought-iron, are made from a single piece of metal, of a rhombus figure, as represented at O in Figs. 6 and 7, having curved and angular projections on the parallel inclined sides of the aforesaid plate or metal, and by bending said rhombus plate and the angular and curved projections, in the manner represented in Figs. 4, 5, and 8, can be made to assume the form ofa right or left hand plow, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, and by reversing their posi tions to answer for two plows, each thus making four plows from two pieces of metal cut by one pattern. v
The triangular projection I, when bent, forms the landside, as seen in Fig.8. The curved projection H, when bent as seen in Figs. 4, 5, and 8, forms the ears to receive the oblique rod L connecting them, by which it is braced by the addition of other rods to the standard and beam I). When made of cast-iron the pattern can be so made as to substitute a flange or other projection in place of the curved projection H, by which it can be attached to an extended landside or otherwise, as desired.
This mold-board and landsi'de, as described, can be attached to this combined plow, or to any other form of plow combined, double or single.
\Nhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Oonstrncting the plow in the manner described-that is to say, constructing and arrangingthe projections H and I upon the moldboard, so that the plow may be used either side upa right or left plow.
I do not claim combining a number of plows and attaching them to a frame.
