SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 347,415, dated August 17, 1886. Application filed April 19, 1886. Serial No. ream-1. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD BUeHHoLz, a' citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shawl and Bundle Oarriers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a shawl or bundle carrier embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section in line r, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents asect-ion in line yy, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 representsasection of a modification. Fig. 5 represents a section in line 2 2, Fig. 4.

My invention consists of a shawl and bundle carrier formed with a clamp, substantially as hereinafter set forth, whereby the straps may be firmly held without the employment of buckles.

Referring to-the drawings, A represents the handle of a shawl or bundle carrier, and B represents boxes at the ends thereof. Within said boxes are sliding clamps 0, formed of metal or other suitable material, the contiguous faces of the boxes and clamps being inclined or tapering, whereby the clamps are adapted to act as wedges for holding the straps of the carrier, as will be hereinafter specified. One end of each clamp is provided with a knob, button, or other handle, D, whereby the clamp may be operated for releasing the strap when required, said handle being in the direction of the length of the clamp and accessible in the end slot or opening of the box, as in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, or at right angles thereto, as in Figs 4 and 5. In the latter case the handle passes through a slot in the top of thebox, where it is readily operated for moving the clamp.

The handle and boxes may be formed together of cast metal, or the handle formed of wood, leather, or other material and the boxes of sheet or other metal riveted or otherwise secured to the handle. One end of each strap is connected with the respective box and the strap passed around the shawl or bundle to be carried. The end of the strap is then inserted between the clamp and box, and when the strap is drawn up to full extent the clamp wedges against the same and bites it, so that it is firmly held and prevented from slipping, it being noticed that by the provision of the clamps, buckles or other fastenings are dispensed with in articles of the class. When the shawl or bundle is to be removed, the clamps are moved back by means of the handles, whereby they release the straps, and the latter may then be loosened or withdrawn from the boxes.

In Figs. 4 and 5 the innersides of the boxes are shown as grooved to receive tongues on the sides of the clamps, whereby the clamps are guided in their motions; but this is not an essential feature. The wide ends of the box in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 are formed with flanges or shoulders a,which overhang the adjacent sides of the clamps, so that displacement of the clamps from the boxes is prevented. If desired, springs may belocated within the boxes and bear against the clamps, for causing the latter to close against the straps when the latter are to be secured within the boxes.

I am I aware that it is not new to employ a wedge in connection with a fastening or clamping device for reins; neither is it new to employ cams in fastenings devices in shawl or package carriers, and such I do not claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

An improved package-carrier consisting of 85 having handles which pass through slots of 0 the boxes, all combined substantially as described.
