Description
I (No Model.) I R. RRRRY & J. o. PARKER.
STOVE LEG. No.. 346,888. I Patented Aug. 10, 1886.
Jay. 7
UNITED STATES ROBERT BERRY AND JOHN G. PARKER, OF BROCKPORT, NElV YORK.
STOVE-LEG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346,888, dated August 10, 1886.
Application filed October 19, 1885. Serial No.180,270. (No model.).
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ROBERT BERRY and JOHN C. PARKER, both of Brockport, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a certain new and 'useful Improvement in Stove-Legs; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings accompanying this application.
Our improvement relates to that class of stove-legs which are provided with casterwheels to facilitate the moving of the stove from place to place; and iteonsists inthc following construction and arrangement. v
in the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the stove-leg and an elevation of the caster-wheel attachment, partially in section. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the leg and attachment. Fig. 3 is a cross-section in line or a: of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view ofthe detent for holding the stove-leg ele vated.
A shows the stove-leg, which is of ordinary form and construction, except in front and near the top it is provided with an opening, a, for the insertion of a lever.
B B are two. bearing-blocks fitting on the inside of the leg at suitable distance apart, and secured in place against slipping by means of bands 0 U, which are wrapped tightly about the leg, the meeting ends having lugs, as shown at b I), Fig. 2, and secured by screws 1' 9*, that screw through slots 19 p into the bearing-blocks. By this means the attachment hereinafter described is adapted to different legs, and can be taken off from one leg and applied to another without difficulty.
D is a shank of square form in cross-section,
which slides freely up and down in sockets formed in the bearings B. At the bottom this shank has an offset, (1, on the back side, and in the front it has a series of ratchet-teeth, f f.
E is the yoke or hearing for the caster-wheel G. The yoke has a vertical stem, 9, that rests in the offset (Z and turns freely therein. The
wheel is journaled in the yoke so as to drag behind in the usual way. It will be seen that while the shank that carries the caster-wheel is movablenp and down, the yoke to which the caster-wheel is attached can turn axially to any desired position.
H is a detent or dog pivoted to lugs h h in the upper part of the leg and engaging with the ratchet-teeth f. It is provided with handles k 70, by which it may be operated by hand, and against it at the rear restsa coiled or other spring, m, which presses it up to engagement with the ratchet-teeth.
The operation is as follows: \Vhen the stove rests on the floor and is in place-for use, the caster-wheels are raised above the level and out of contact, so that the stove has firm contact. To raise the stove on the casters, a lever,K,is inserted through the opening a in the front of the leg, and engaged with the ratchetteethf. Then by raising the lever the stoveleg will be raised free from the floor. As fast as the leg is raised, the detent H will catch the teeth and hold the leg elevated. By this means it can be raised to any desired height. This arrangement is also of service in leveling stoves on uneven floors,as any one of the casters can be brought down to the level, if the leg does not reach.
This invention is applicable not only to stoves, but also to many other articles where legs are used.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the leg-A, provided with the opening a, of hearings on the said leg, the shank D,loosely mounted in said bearings, the casterwheel G,swiveled inthe shank, said shank being provided with ratchet-teeth f next to the opening, and the detent H, engaging with the ratchet-teeth, as set forth.
In witness whereof we have hereunto signed our names in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT BERRY. JOHN C. PARKER.
