COLLAPSIBLE CASE.

EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346,779, dated August 3, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LAISEUR N. SINGLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Uniontown, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Collapsible Cases, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in collapsible cases for kid gloves and other articles; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

I11 the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a case embodying my improvements, showing the hinged lid open. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view with the gloves in place. Fig. 4 is a similar view with the case collapsed.

A represents the bottom of the case, which is made of card-board or any other suitable material, and the length and breadth of the said bottom board correspond to the length and breadth of the gloves that are to be inclosed in the case.

0 represents the top or cover of the case, which is also made of card-board or other suitable preferred material, and corresponds in length and breadth with the bottom board, A. The cover of the case is provided at one end with a hinged lid, 13, which is free to fold back upon the cover, as represented in dotted lines in Fig. 2, in order to uncover one-half of the case.- The cover is connected to the bottom of the case by means of a strip of cloth or other flexible material, D,which forms the side and end walls of the case, the upper edge of the said strip being secured to the cover, and the lower edge thereof being secured to the bottom board. The upper edgeof the strip,wh-ich bears under the hinged lid, is secured around a wire frame, E, the function of which is to secure a sufficient rigidity for the upper edge of the uncovered portion of the case. By making the strip D of cloth or other flexible material, and securing it between the cover and the bottom board, it will be readily understood that the cover may be pressed downwardly directly upon the bottom board, when the case is empty, thus making the case collapsible, and enabling it to be stored in a very small space.

F represents an elastic band or strap, the

ends of which are attached to the edges of the bottom boardnear the center thereof, the said elastic strap or band passing around the upper side of the cover, and thus servmg to keep the said cover normally compressed against the bottom board. The gloves are folded and placed in the case, one pair above another until the case is full, and the elast1c strap, by exerting a' constant pressure, keeps the cover of the case compressed firmly against the gloves, thus retaining them in shape as folded.

On the upper side of the hinged lid 1s 1nscribed the price of the gloves, the sizes contained in the box, and the'colors thereof. In order to keep the lid closed, I provide its outer edge with an elastic loop, G, the outer end of which catches over a button or stud, H, on the under side of the bottom board.

A glove-case thus constructed protects the gloves from being soiled, preserves their fin ish, and keeps them soft, and is of great advantage to the retailer in handling the goods. as the case indicates the colors, sizes, and quality of the gloves without having to take them out, thus preventing different grades of gloves from becoming mixed on the counter, and making reassortrnent only possible by persons expert in determining the quality of kid gloves, as it is not designed that the gloves themselves should be marked.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. A case for kid glo\-'es, 'comprising the bottom board, the cover, the flexible strip connecting the said bottom board and the cover, and the elastic strap F, attached to the bottom board and passing over the cover, substantially as described.

2. A case for kid gloves, comprising the bottom board, the cover having thehinged lid B, the flexible strip D, having its lower edge connected to the bottom board and its upper edge attached to the cover, and the wire frame E in the upper end of the strip D, wider the hinged lid, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
