CARTON-CARRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 25,1916.
Application filed June "2', 1915. Serial No. 32,6 i9.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK MELVILLE, Jr.,v
a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful improvements in Ca ton-Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates more particularly to a device for carrying shoe-containing boxes or cartons, and the object is to provide a simple and convenient structure, whereby a number of such cartons or corresponding articles can be effectively secured together against danger of derangement or dislocation and may be readily transported, at the same time providing means whereby the labels or other designations on the cartons are completely exposed for examination.
An embodiment of theinvention that has proven entirely satisfactory is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the carrier when filled with cartons. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on an enlarged scale, and with the cartons removed. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional. view showing the top wall in bottom plan.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
in the embodiment illustrated, a rectangular bottom wall i and a corresponding top wall 5 are employed, the same corresponding in size to the cross sectional area of a set of cartons, as for example, two placed side by side. Connecting the rear edges of thetop and bottom walls is a side wall 6 that is hinged to both, as shown at 7. The walls a, 5 and 6 are preferably made of fiber-board. A relatively broad strap 8 of webbing is secured to the central portion of the opposite edge of the bottom wall 4, and has at its free end a buckle 9 to engage a strap section 10 carried by the correspond ing portion of the top wall 5, another strap 11 extending across both the top and bottom walls being held in suitable keepers l2 and having a buckle 13 secured to one end and arranged to be engaged by the other end. This strap, as shown, extends across the space between the opposite side edges of the top and bottom walls. A handle 14 is secured to the top wall by clips 15, and the fasteners 16 for the upper keeper 12 and for the strap section 10 pass through the'wall 5 and through a reinforcing strip 17 located against the under face of the same.
In using the device, the straps are unbuckled and the cartons placed in position. The broad strap 8 as indicated in Fig. 1 bridges the joint between the two piles or rows of cartons, thus effectively preventing any from slipping forward out of place, while the strap 11 in like manner prevents their lateral displacement. When the device is not in use, it may be folded flat so that it will occupy but little space.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will. be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my inven tion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character set forth. a bottom wall, a top wall and a side wall hinged to the rear edges of the bottom and top walls, a strap for detachably connecting the front portions of the top and bottom walls, and a strap extending across the top and bottom walls and across the spaces between their opposite side edges, the space between said front portions and side edges being otherwise open.
2. ln a device of the character set forth, an angular bottom wall and a correspond ing top wall respectively of substantially the cross sectional area of a set of cartons to be carried, a side wall hinged to the top and bottom walls at one edge of each, straps extending across the space between the other corresponding edges of the top and bottom walls for connecting the same, and a handle secured to the top wall, the space between said other corresponding edges being otherwise substantially open and unobstructed.
3. In a device of the character set forth, an angular bottom wall, and a corresponding top wall respectively of substantially the cross sectional area of a set of cartons to be carried, a side wall hinged to the top and bottom walls at one edge of each, a relatively broad strap for connecting the opposite edges of the top and bottom walls and ing its terminals.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- 3 nesses.
