LOUIS K. SCOTFORD, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE SCOT- FORD MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SELF-INKING HAND-STAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346,690, dated August 3, 1886.
Application tiled July 29, 1884. Serial No. 139,0d5. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, LoUIs K. SeoTFoRD, of Kansas City, county of Jackson, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Iniprovements in Selflnking Hand-Stamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in selfinking handstamps, especially to the die or type plate.
The object of my invention is to facilitate adjusting the type or die plate to project a greater or less distance from the reversible frame on which it is held.
The invention consists in the combination, with a reversible plate carrying dies or type, of an additional plate held on the first by adjusting-screws for adjusting the distance between the two platesall as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a face view of my improved hand-slamp, parts being broken out and others shown in section. Fig. 2 is a planview of the under side ofthe plate for holding the dating dies or types. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the same on the line x a", Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a crosssectional elevation on line yy, Fig. 2.
The inking-pad A is held on the under side of the top crosspiece of a Ufshaped frame, B, between the shanks of which frame the reversible plate C is held. The plate C is provided with the slot c, to receive the holder d, which contains the type D, for printing the day or date, or other removable and interchangeable types. The holder d is retained in the plate C by friction, and is prevented from being forced out by the impact ot' impression by the rod a, on which the said plate C is pivoted. Above the plate C the plate E is held by screws F, the plate E having a longi- 45 tudinal slot, G, through which the types D on the plate C project. On the upper surface of the plate E the txed die H is secured around the slot G, or at one, two, or all sides of the saine, according to the arrangement of the 50 words, Src., to be printed. The screws F are held to turn in the plate E, but cannot travel through the same. They are also held to turn in the plate C, and are adapted to travel through it. The said screws have slotted or 5 other heads, J, below the plate C.
In order to produce a clear and distinct impression, the faces of the datingtype and the other type must all be in one plane. The several parts are easily adjusted to this posic() tion by turning the screws F until the face of the type on the plate E is liush with the face ofthe type on the plate C.
The abovedescribed adjustable typeplate C can also be used without the datingtype- 55 for instance,in adj ust-ing dies which are thicker at one end than at the other.
By means of the above described device Such a type-plate can be adjusted to be absolutely level. 7o
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a hand-stamp, the combination, with a reversible plate, C, on which types or dies are secured, and a plate, E, provided with a slot, 75 through which the type on the plate C pass, the plate E also carrying dies or types, of screws for adjusting the faces of the dies orl types on the plates CE in the same plane, the said screws being passed through the plate C, 8o
and held to turn in the plate E, substantially as herein shown and described.
' LOUIS K. SCOTFORD.
